Post your favourite and most detested Kanji
for example for me it's:

Best looking:遠
ugliest:忙( omg were they on opium when they made that up or something )

For me, (I've only gotten up to about 500 in RTK1) I'd say...
My favorite: 式 style. The strokes always come out easy and look smooth.
Worst: 資 assets. I think 欠 is rather difficult to make proportionate in any case, and 貝 is very squished when on the bottom.

I've always liked 珍 for some reason. And there's something about 蕊 that just makes me smile when I see it.

On the other hand, I've always detested 承. And 飛 bugs me, as well. But then, it might just be because I've always had a hellofa time writing them nicely. sad

凹 and 凸, they don't even look like Kanji, just like silly drawings, no mystery to them.

lol lol

The one I refuse to learn is 襲. No one should ever have been allowed to create a kanji like that.

For some reason I really like 誰. I learned it when I was about 13 years old and just being able to write something complicated like that at that age thrilled me.

Ugliest: Every simplified hanzi. Looking at stuff like 么儿专个气乐发 etc is enough to make one feel nauseous.

Oh my god yes.

Also not a fan of the 凹/凸 combo either.

Not really sure what kanji I find particularly appealing.. I'm more of a glass half empty person.

I love 凸凹, it's even a jukugo.

O MY ******* GODS YES!!!!!

I hate simplified Hanzi it is so ugly, what I hate most is the way they strip characters of their blocks of primitives and replace them with horrible criss crossing bollocks with no meaning stripping characters of their form and meaning.

Every person who knows about my Japanese agrees when I show them a Kanji and then it's simplified equivalent

I don't like those convex/concave block things either.

my favorite by far : 永
the perfect kanji , love at first sigh
I like the drawing  , a modele of balance .
All the basic strokes are included
and the meaning is also one of my favorite word : eternity .

On a side note I like the Heisig story too , very poetical (even though when it comes to eternity it's very hard not to be big_smile)    perfect I toldyou . big_smile

I quickly took a liking to  武 & 城 & 襲 (even if for the latter I had to struggle with it a lot for the dragon part of the kanji )
I think I enjoy 導 too  but as for the other sometimes it's hard to tell wether you like the drawing or the very notion.

The one I hate ?
well basically all the 24 strokes and more kanjis .... for me it's just showing off....not to mention a f.... loss of time .
and obviously I have to go with the others :凹/凸 is hardly a kanji.... you don't bust your ass 365 days a year 18H a day to review some 4 years old kid writing.....
EDIT :and yes simplified hanzi is definetely ugly too.... while I never learned any of those languages it always make me think of  a guy learning both chinese and korean at the same time ,   mixing and messing  everything  up ....

Do you use all the pre-WW2 unreformed versions of the kanji, then? :-)

Personally I write everything in grass script 万葉仮名. (I am learning how to read it right now actually)

Actually, just after posting to this thread, I asked my wife what her favorite and least favorite characters were. And, after telling her what mine were, she argued, "your favorites would probably be different if they meant something else."

And there is the beauty of kanji. When you have truly internalized them, it is almost impossible to divorce the image from the meaning.

Man, I love learning this language... cool

Personally I like simplified Hanzi a lot. Why put in TONS of radicals and extra strokes when it works fine with less? Faster to write, easier to read. Quite often, less is more.

because it's ugly . VERY big_smile

I think I mentioned this before, but any handwritten version of 警 makes me sick.
I quite like 冠, especially in the form where the front "human leg" stretches out under the "glue" (unlike in Gekkeikan's logo where it's written as a hook, although that version is cool too).  I'm not sure which version is the usual handwritten form, though.

yea I guess so, we base our recognizing of (or looking at?) kanjis on stories made around the meanings, so it's impossible to divorce them:)

I find 唱 very cool, I think I will never forget it even after 100years!
言 is natural too, so I like it! 夢 is such an amazing kanji, the story I made for it very calming!
The best one is this 女, I find it very beautiful!
I hate 万, I had bad times remembering it and I hate the second stroke, unnatural and had bad times writing it.

There are no ugly kanji, some kanji are just very special.

Yeah, gonna have to agree: I always thought that 忙 looked pretty stupid.

On the other hand, 互 is friggin' awesome. As is 答. I mean, you look at it hard enough... that's a face. A couple of eyes with the eyebrows all horizontal, then an awesome mustache followed by a straight, no-nonsense mouth and then like a beard or something. So great. I'll never forget that one ever.

also shut up about 凹 and 凸 they're beautiful
or at least they're impossible to forget the meanings of. Two of the few kanji that ACTUALLY look like what they mean.

夢 is definitely the most attractive kanji ever.

As for hideousness... I'm not sure. But I do find 警 very very hard to write. The proportions just never work out.

凹 and 凸 look perverse to me.

麗 looks like some kind of alligator.
