Hello,
I have just released version 20.3 of subs2srs.
Download subs2srs v20.3 via SourceForge
Fixed the "Win32Exception: The system cannot find the drive specified" exception (thanks shamanana).

@cb
I just had a quick suggestion about subs2srs. Under the generate audio clips sections, the options defaults to "extract from video" and the "audio" part is grayed out. At first I thought this meant "audio" was unelectable until I did checked something else off.
BASICALLY what I am saying is that, it shouldn't be grayed out unless the generate audio clips option is checked off.
Sorry to nitpick! I love the program!
PS: Your workaround for the audio timing being off work perfectly! Thanks!

I have a feature request.
It would be nice if there was a way I could update the audio clips If I adjusted the timing of the subtitles. I created a deck, but as I was testing, I found out there were some lines with small sync problems, missing a syllable or with an extra one. I then used Aegisub to fix these problems, but there was no way I could correct the media that was already on my deck.
If, for instance, the media files had a simpler filename, with just the name and a sequence number, I would have been able to update the files simply by re-processing the movie and overwriting my deck's media folder.
P.S. And thanks for the program, it was a brilliant idea.

Although it's too late for the cards already in your deck, for the future you can set the format of media filenames by editing the following settings located in the settings.txt file (which resides in the same directory as subs2srs.exe):
audio_filename_format
snapshot_filename_format
video_filename_format
For example, you can set them to something like the following:
audio_filename_format = ${deck_name}_${0:episode_num}_${4:sequence_num}.mp3
snapshot_filename_format = ${deck_name}_${0:episode_num}_${4:sequence_num}.jpg
video_filename_format = ${deck_name}_${0:episode_num}_${4:sequence_num}.avi

If I finish one episode of cards, and want to add cards from the second episode, do I just do all of the same steps except import it into the already existing deck? Should be fairly simple I assume?

Yes. Like you said, just follow the same steps for additional episodes.
Is there any reason I should be having problems with subs2SRS? A few weeks ago I just made a deck and it worked perfectly fine. This past week I've tried to make a new deck with a different drama, and the preview works fine, but then when I open and import it I just get a big blue "?" where the image should be. No audio, either. Text shows up fine. In the "Out" folder I checked out the audio/images and they work fine if I try to open them separately.
I'm doing everything the same as I've always done, not sure what the issue is.

The most probable cause of the blue question marks is that your Anki deck either can't see the Anki media folder or that your new files aren't in the Anki media folder.
Make sure that your Anki deck and Anki media folder have the same name. Example: "mydeck.anki" and "mydeck.media".
Also, remember that an Anki deck only has one media folder. In your case you would need to copy the media files from the media folder that you just created into the existing Anki media folder.

Okay, well I can move everything into the existing media folder being used, but now I have an issue. I'm not sure exactly how to combine one deck into another when this media stuff is involved.
So I have my existing folder, from the drama Mother, and want to add an episode of Zettai Kareshi. I hope to keep adding into my existing anki deck so that I have one focused deck. The media folder it's using is in the directory for Mother.
Is it clear what I am trying to do? If not, I can try my best to make it more direct. As it stands, I see no way of doing this. Even if I put all of my media info into one place, it's still labeled under what Mother is classified as: "Shows." So it's not like I can just add my other stuff, because there can't be duplicates. I really hope I'm not overlooking incredibly obvious.

I'm not sure I understand this part.
You should just be able to:
1) Open the existing Mother deck
2) Click File | Import
3) Import the The Zettai Kareshi .tsv file (check "Tag facts with duplicate fields instead of deleting" if you want to keep duplicates)
4) Move the contents of the Zettai Kareshi media folder to the Mother media folder
At this point you should have:
1) A Mother deck that includes both the original Mother cards + the Zettai Kereshi cards.
2) A Mother media folder that includes both the original Mother media files + the Zettai Kereshi media files.
Though you might want to rename your Mother deck to something more generic like "JDramas" (example: "JDramas.anki" and "JDramas.media").
First off, I absolutely LOVE this program. I have made more listening comprehension progress in two weeks using this program than in any other two month period. I am using it to learn spanish in conjuction with movies on hbo latino. Hbo latino has spanish closed captioning which match up pretty much word for word for what is being said. I then use ccextractor to convert the closed captions to .srt files. I next use open subtitle translator to translate to spanish. It uses google translate. I actually like the literal word for word translation. It translates into a broken english but I know what they are trying to say. I think sometimes when movies are subtitled they will use different words to mean similar things and that just confuses me more. Anyway, I had a couple of questions/suggestions. Is there any way that the id tags for the mp3's on an ipod can automatically start a new line with the second subtitle. ex. right now it shows this on the lyrics....
Finalmente encontraste tu kefi. Finally
you found your Kefi.
Is there a way i can make it look like....
Finalmente encontraste tu kefi.
Finally you found your kefi.
I know that with longer sentences it would look a little different but still better than the way it is now.
I also know I can manually edit the lyrics tab in itunes but that takes so much time. Time that could be spent listening!
Thanks in advance, and thanks for an awesome program!

Currently there is no setting to control the lyrics id3 tag. However, it won't take long to add it in, so stay tuned...
Edit:
I just added this feature. Here's how do to what you want:
1) Download version 20.4 from the post below this one and install it
2) Open the settings.txt file (it's in the same directory as subs2srs.exe)
3) Find the audio_id3_lyrics setting.
4) Change it to:
audio_id3_lyrics = ${subs1_line}${newline}${subs2_line}
5) Run subs2srs like normal

Thanks, this worked. At first I was still having issues, but I realized when I did rename the files to "JDramas" (as per your recommendation) that the media folder had lost the ".media" tag. This resulted in continuing issues, but thankfully I noticed it. Thanks again for your help, everything is working fine again.
TheVinster,
Woohoo! I'm glad you got it working.
I've changed the settings file to ...
audio_id3_lyrics = ${subs1_line}${newline}${subs2_line}
but it did not seem to change the lyrics into seperate lines on my ipod. I'm wondering if I need to change the extract media lyrics subs1 and 2 section after having read....
If you want to change lyrics tags that the Extract Audio from Media tool
; generates, than you need to change extract_media_lyrics_subs1_format and
; extract_media_lyrics_subs2_format instead of this settting.
*update
I've tried adding the ${newline} command in various different spots in the extract_media_lyrics_subs1_format and extract_media_lyrics_subs2_format area of the settings file. However, since from what i remember of programming (BASIC circa 1983), I'm not sure if you have to change the program which allows us to then change the settings file. I guess I should have been more clear in my original post that I was using the extract media lyrics portion of the program to get my id3 tags from both subtitle files.

I apologize if this has been addressed before (I couldn't find a solution), but can somebody please recommend a utility that will extract subtitles directly from a DVD? I combed the Internet for two hours tonight and found nothing. Also, to satisfy any copyright concerns, I personally own these DVDs. Thanks in advance.
Try VSRip, that's what I use. If you Google it it should be the first hit.

Cool. Thanks. I did eventually find that app (my search query must have been slightly different).
Quick question...Do you do two passes on the DVD, one for the English subs and another for the Japanese, or just one pass with both languages selected and the utility will output two separate files? I did a test late last night, which produced two output files - one with some metadata and the other with nothing. I had like English and French selected (didn't have a Japanese DVD on me). I haven't had an opportunity to troubleshoot yet.... Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Whoops. According to the id3v2 spec, lyrics require a carriage return + line-feed between lines. Currently, only a line-feed is being applied. I'll try to fix this soon.

Hello,
I have just released version 20.5 of subs2srs.
Download subs2srs v20.5 via SourceForge
* Added proper support for newlines in the ID3 Lyrics tag.
* Added ${cr} (carriage return) and ${lf} (line feed) tokens to settings.txt.
* Removed the ${newline} token from settings.txt.
cb4960
cb4960,
Super cool product. Quick question. Why is subs2srs generating .png files for all of the dialog instead of text? Does that have to do with the process used to create the .idx/sub files? Thanks in advance.

Vobsub (.idx/.sub) is an image-based subtitle format, not a text-based subtitle format. subs2srs merely extract the images and converts them to a format that can be used with Anki (.png).
If you want to convert an image-based subtitle format to a text-based subtitle format, you will need to use some sort of OCR software such as subrip.

Hi Erik,
I'm not totally sure I understand your question, but basically I leave the default settings, and that usually captures ALL of the subtitle streams on the DVD into a single output file. Usually this is just English and Japanese. This outputs into a single subtitle file (well, a single pair of files - an IDX file and a SUB file, these are both part of the same set of subtitles and both needed.)
If you put these two files into the same directory as the movie file, and rename them to the same name as the movie file (keeping the IDX and SUB extensions) then when you load the movie, most video players will automatically load the subtitles. You can only see one language at a time, but on my movie player (Zoom Player v6.0) you can toggle between all the different language subtitles present by hitting CTRL+B. Any half decent movie player should have a similar option somewhere, but I can't tell you how to access it.
Hope that helps.
Nick
Hello,
I have just released version 21.0 of subs2srs.
Download subs2srs v21.0 via SourceForge
This release mostly addresses Mono Platform (Linux/Mac) issues. All changes have been tested with Linux Mint 9.
* The Preview Feature Now Works on Mono Platforms
See screenshot below.
If the text shows box characters (or otherwise looks wrong), please do the following:
1. Open settings.txt (it’s in the subs2srs.exe directory)
2. Find the “default_preview_east_asain_font” setting
3. Set the “default_preview_east_asain_font” to a valid font name.
Note: Due to a Mono platform bug, the Audio Preview will play back in mono (single channel).
* Vobsub Subtitles Will No Longer Appear Garbled on Mono Platforms
This issue was originally brought up by Asriel in this post.
* Nudged Some of the Widgets a Few Pixels Here And There.
This was mostly done so that widgets would be positioned correctly on Mono Platforms.
I also replaced the original Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo sample deck with 2 new versions:
1) Version with audio clips and snapshots (480x270). This deck is like the original but the snapshots are larger. Includes context information. 1558 lines. ~68 MB.
Download here
2) Version with video clips and snapshots (both 480x270). Includes context information. 1558 lines. ~388 MB.
Part 1, Part 2.
