I tried using it for the first time, and everything works except the outputted subs seem to be scrambled as so.

The originally outputted .tsv file has the same text, so something's going wrong during the conversion process but I'm not sure what... =[ I've tried setting the system language to Japanese as well as English, but that doesn't seem to be it.

I had the same problem. Here's how I fixed it:
Open the srt file in firefox (drag it from the explorer window to the firefox window, easiest way).

Change the character encoding (View -> Character Encoding -> Auto Detect -> Japanese) - the text should show up as Japanese text like it's supposed to be.

Open the srt file in a text-editor (I use Notepad++) and paste the text from firefox. You might have to change the text-editor's format to UTF-8, depending on your software of choice.

After you paste the copied text to the srt file, save, and then you're done.

EDIT: Not sure if this works with Internet Explorer, probably does. If you're using IE though, do yourself a favor and switch to Firefox. big_smile

I have just released version 17 of subs2srs.

Download subs2srs v17 via SourceForge

1) Preview Feature:

Allows you to preview the Subs1/Subs2 pair, snapshot, and audio clip for the first episode. Each time you tweak the settings (for example the audio pad, or the time shift, or exclusion rules) just click the "Regenerate Preview" button to update the preview. Vobsub images will be displayed in area below the list labeled "Subs1:" or "Subs2:".

2) Audio Stream Selection:
Some videos contain multiple audio streams/tracks. This options allows you to select which audio stream to use when making audio clips and video clips.

3) Option to Exclude Lines Longer than X Milliseconds (as suggested by Ruiner)
You may set a maximum length for a line in milliseconds. Any line whose timing exceeds the maximum number of milliseconds will not be processed.

4) Context Formatting Options (as suggested by Ruiner)
You may choose which information from the leading/trailing lines that you would like to appear in the .tsv import file. For example, if would only like to import the audio clip information from a leading lines, than check only that option. This feature makes the .tsv import file less cluttered with information that is not important to you and makes it easier to import into Anki. Note: The Subs1 text and Subs2 text of the leading lines is always placed into the .tsv file.

5) Remove newline character ("\N") and embedded styling contained within certain .ass files.

6) Added comment to beginning of .tsv file describing the import format

7) Vobsub stream is now selected from a dropdown on the Main interface.

Linux Users: I've only released the Windows version for now. The Mono version has some kind of encoding issue where it was showing boxes instead of text in the preview. In addition the audio preview sounded very choppy. I will investigate this furthur at a later time. If you want to use v17 anyway, just download the Windows version. The only difference between the Windows and Mono versions is that the Windows version comes with ffmpeg - the actual subs2srs executable is the same.

Ruiner: I'll try to get to your multiple span suggestion in the next release.

Awesome! I have a tonne of decks to make, this will make things much smoother. I would feel bad for simply excluding longer lines rather than breaking them up, but my new process of subs2srsing slices from many episodes as they air tells me it's not that big a deal in the long run.

New Feature: The Dueling Subtitles Tool

Use this tool to create subtitle files (in .ass format) that will simultaneously display a line from Subs1 and its corresponding line from Subs2.  Here are some screenshots that demonstrate the Dueling Subtitles feature:

These subtitles can be used in any video player that accepts .ass subtitle files. In order to display the subtitles, it is usually as simple as renaming the subtitles to match the name of the video file and then opening the video file or finding your player's "open subtitles" feature. This feature might be useful for those who are hesitant about viewing only the foreign language subtitles for fear that they might not get as much enjoyment out of it. And for those who want to instantly check their listening comprehension.

Other Stuff
- CHANGE: Force output file to UTF-8 instead of using default.
- FIXED: Remove any lines where end time is less than or equal to start time.

Hello.
I have anki with the "Japanese Support" Plugin.
It automatically adds the furigana over the kanji in the "Reading" box

However it won't do this automatically. Every card's "Reading" box is empty after I import them. (even with my other decks that are not subs2srs!!)

In order to have anki fill it out automatically like it's suppose to  I have to view EVERY single card in the card explorer and then click on the Expression box then the Reading box, and then it fills in the kanji with the hiragana.

Is there another way for it to generate this all at once or am I doomed?

P.S. I was just looking at the above picture from The haruhi anime. does it have j-subs? Is this in the dvd of the anime. Do all dvds+blu-ray of animes have j-subtitles in them?

You're in luck! Just do the following:

1) From the main menu, click "Edit | Browse Items..." to bring up the Browser dialog.
2) From the Browser dialog menu, click "Edit | Select All".
3) From the Browser dialog menu, click "Actions | Regenerate Readings".

This will generate the reading for each and every card selected.

It contains the subs for all episodes of the first season.

Does anybody else have problems opening .ass files from this site? I'm getting an error that says it's just a binary mess, and can't find anything that'll open it.

To complicate things I'm using linux. I'd like to be able to play it with the movie, but I mostly want it for a reference. I've tried Kaffeine (xine), Mplayer, and various text editors, and all just get gibberish.

I'm using my system as a default language Japanese, so that shouldn't be the problem.

Edit: vi opens it, so I can at least read the file roll

Works for me (Linux, gmplayer); I picked one at random I happen to have the video for, and downloaded it with firefox:

gmplayer -sub /home/pm215/Desktop/\[dmhy\]\[aoi_hana\]\[01\]\[chs_cht_jpn\]\[avc_aac\]\[1280x720\]\[2ec9ca40\].ass ~/anime/watched/\[Koharubi\]_Aoi_Hana_-_01_\[162D7A7D\].mkv

(you have to enable the subs track via right-click menu; gmplayer seems to default to 'no subtitles'.)

As you've noticed, a .ass file is basically just a plain text file. If you're seeing it as binary junk then either the file or your system is using the wrong character encoding. (The Aoi Hana subs at least are UTF-8.)

I've gotten some of them to work through different text editors. Ironically because I have Japanese as my default language, it's trying to load it in a weird way and can't read Japanese.

I haven't figured out how to load it in my movie players, but I'm close to figuring it out. I mostly wanted an easy way to look up the parts I don't understand without listening a bunch of times, so the text editor is enough.

Just a quick update. On the Dueling Subtitles dialog, I added an option to generate a "quick reference" .txt file with just the Subs1 and Subs2 text. This makes it easier to follow the dialog with Firefox + Rikaichan.

Hi!
I just recently updated my OS (Linux Mint), and something weird happened with subs2srs. I've downloaded mono etc, and I'm able to open the software, BUT all the boxes, bars etc do not have any text in them. They're all blank. Now, wtf?
I've been using subs2srs on this computer for quite some time, but I've never had this problem before, so I just wondered if any of guys had experienced the same issue? Or have any idea on how to fix it?

EDIT 2: Unrelated question - I'm trying to convert the first episode of Buzzer Beat. The media works, but the expressions/text from subs are messed up (2å9835hrisdUUUU## style big_smile) Anyway, I'm not working with an .srt file, but with an .ssa file.
Is there a way to make it work? I really don't know how to, since I've only been using .srt files before. The subs work fine in Quicktime, but not when converted using subs2srs.

I'm downloading Linux Mint. I'll see if I can reproduce the issue on this end. Sorry that you have to go through so much pain to run it.

I thought that I could get away with it but...

My .ass/.ssa parser is VERY stupid. It assumes that the file has the same exact format that Aegisub outputs. Someday I will make the parser more robust so that It will accept .ass/.ssa in ANY format.

Until then, however, please try opening the .ssa with Aegisub, save it as a .ass file (or a .srt file) and run subs2srs again. If it works, let us know!

First thing, I installed Linux Mint 8 Main Edition and must say I like how non-orange it is.

More to the point, I did an apt-get for mono and mono-winforms* and ran subs2srs (version 18.1 - yeah, the one tagged as being for Windows). It seems to work fine for me. I can see the text and I don't see any of the visual anomalies you described. Not sure what the problem could be at this point. Maybe one of our resident Linux gurus can offer some useful advice.
