Hello!

another question:
when I just failed some flashcards in the 1st review - how long do I have to wait with the 2nd review?

I would like to do the 2nd review right now.

The FAQs did not answer my questions ... the forum-search neither.

You can click on the red failed stack whenever you want.

referring to your experience: what is the best pause?
1 day?
2 days?
same evening?

I've got a "failed stack always empty" policy.

So I do failed cards again right at the "end" of my study session...

But that's up to you!   smile

frlmarty, there is no need to wait to work on the "failed" stack. You can rework on the story, or just rework on the visualizing part, and click "Learned" for those kanji. The red stack is just a wait to emphasize cards that need attention, and by design choice, they don't reenter the review cycle until you explicitly said I (re) "learned" this card.

sorry, I am obviously not intuitive with this new tool ;-)
I expected there to be a embedded timer which would say:
"you can't review this stack yet, have to wait x more days for the next review."

I could even review the 3rd box right now - the tool shows no "time out" for the review of ths 3rd box.

If I get it right there is an "expire-signal" for reviews but no "too soon-yet-signal"?

I have already reviewed the first 120 cards 2 times this evening.

I have
- a small stack with red cards in the 1st box
- a large stack with green cards in the 3rd box

I fear I already messed the system up a bit since I went to the 3rd box in one day.
:-(

I expected the system to tell me when I sould wait with a review:
'There will be lots of reviews early on, but once your cards spread into the higher compartments, they will be scheduled for longer intervals,...'

the website says:
'If you review cards ahead of time, you are encouraging your memory to store the information in short term memory instead of long term memory, thus defeating the purpose of the review scheduling.'

Could you please help me with the scheduling?

If you have all green stacks, nothing is due

When you have ORANGE stacks, do only the orange cards which show that need review

Remove all of the cards, and start all over again, pile 3 will take far too long to expire now

I wonder if there ought to be a pop-up dialog box if you click on a green stack to say "you probably don't want to do this, wait for some orange (expired) cards". The UI makes reviewing non-expired cards far too easy given that it's an action that you should essentially never do...

I always looked over the failed cards at the end of my normal review and adjusted my stories if need be, and then quizzed from the failed stack the first thing the next day before doing new or expired cards.

me too!

I had my lesson learned.
emptied the 3rd box.
a pop up would be very usefull.
or a mouse over tag with the crucial information: only touch the orange stacks.

The review system is explained on the "Learn More" tab: http://kanji.koohii.com/learnmore.php.  Take a few minutes to read through that link and it might become more clear to you how the system works. 

One of the many beauties of this site is that you don't need to worry about your scheduling - the site does it for you with the "Review all expired cards" link on the review page.

Each day you check in and just click on the "Review all expired cards" link on your review page, and once you have reviewed them you are done reviewing expired cards for the day.  After that, if you have more study time you should either study new cards or recently failed cards, as those are the kanji that should be in your short-term memory.   I would recommend you add the failed cards back in the same day they fail or the following day.

Thank you Davis for the advice with the failed cards.

When you read my posting above you can tell I read the information, I quoted a lot.

I simply expected there to be a "blocking" of the green cards which are not due for a review. it would be a simple coded feature.
since I expected this feature to be part of the review-tool I had to fail.

I compare it to a camera: as long as it is saving a picture you can't take a new one.
You just can't.

For very highly motivated students like me it is difficult not to continue - especially when there is no blocking.

If you have done your reviews for the day and relearned the kanji that you failed, why not start working on new kanji?  As you add more and more kanji, the numbers you are scheduled to review each day will grow and you will get busier.

I was able to schedule myself as follows

1) Review Orange Cards

2) Clear failed pile

3) Add new Kanji until I have new orange cards due.

If you are highly motivated you can make it through quickly this way assuming you put in lots of time each day and you will be following the best protocol you can for memory aid, just be prepared for LARGE reviews after adding many cards ^^

Oops, I'm sure glad I read this thread.  I had made the mistake of re-reviewing kanji, many of them to the point of putting them in the third or even fourth pile.

Good thing I'm up to only #249.  I just deleted them all and put those back into the first pile.  I'll review those and clear the failed pile, then leave them alone.  I see there's built-in staggering feature so that I don't get all 249 at once for review later on.

I had a math teacher in high school who said, "When all else fails, follow the directions."  smile
