Using affirmation or goal setting flashcards the goal is to reprogram some beliefs (it ill have to be tested ;-)), so here there is NO SRS. You want to repeat them over and over every day, except it would be best to repeat just once a day and put feeling into it rather than repeat blindly...

I was listening to an audio book called, "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind" by "Dr. Joseph Murphy" and it explains in detail how repeating certain positive assertive thoughts throughout the day for several weeks can lead to very positive changes and results. He mentions many stories asserting his statements.

These positive statements, or prayers as the author calls them, can be to undo negative beliefs or to provoke positive changes. For example, let's say that a person believes that Chinese characters are very difficult and that no one can learn them; this person definitely cannot learn them because he believes that he cannot... So, according to Dr. Murphy, this student must first convince himself that it is very feasible to learn these Chinese characters by repeating several times a day for several weeks some assertive statement that he can learn and study and remember these characters. In my opinion, this is very logical because negative beliefs will definitely limit our real potentials.

On the other hand, what might require further study and research are more ambitious cases. One case for example is when you want to achieve something and you have absolutely no means to achieve it; for example you want to buy an expensive car or obtain some university degree and you cannot afford it. According to this book, you should imagine yourself driving that car or your name on that university diploma on a daily basis for several weeks and then something beyond our understanding will take place. For example, someone will take interest in you and pay your tuition fees... Again, he provides many such examples. Personally, I am still skeptical of this.

Glad to hear that it works with other stuff, as I'm personally counting on it to help me remember dates if I get accepted for a Medieval Studies MA (why did I apply for a History MA when I can't remember dates to save my life, again? >_<). Wish someone'd pay my tuition fees...

Brainwa...uh, self-improvement potential sounds interesting, I would never have thought of that, but it does make sense that it could work. Cognitive behavioral therapy partly involves replacing negative thoughts with positive ones (in treating depression, anxiety disorders), and it does seem that it's effective (I believe computers have been used for it, too, though I don't know how it would work).
I'll think I'll include some affirmative statements in Japanese in my deck (though discovering you can't understand them might limit the motivational effect somewhat), good idea.

I remember seeing an interview with the founder of SuperMemo, who was using it to make his entire life more efficient:

Has anyone used Anki for engineering? I really don't see how its possible... Most of the dynamics, vibrations or acoustics problems took about 3 pages of maths to figure out!
