Time out during Review

I saw the topic posted regarding the login time out, however I have not had a problem with that unless I clear my cookies, as someone mentioned.

My issue is that when I'm reviewing a number of cards (typically my last column where all of the cards end up), I often am unable to sit through the entire process. For example, I will get through about 40, and then have to go away to do something else and leave it for later. When I come back, I get an error (see below) when trying to proceed to the next card. I then have to start the entire stack all over again.

error :
Warning: array_shift() [function.array-shift]: The argument should be an array in /home/faburisu/public_html/kanji/review/class.reviewsession.inc.php on line 63
Record does not exist for framenum

This happens when I leave the screen for ~15 min or more. I'm assuming my session times out.

Would anyone happen to have a solution/workaround for this?

Thanks in advance

I click the "skip to summary" button, which ends your session early, so you can do the rest of the cards later on, without losing progress. Thats what I normally do...

Thanks for your reply!

I did try that. However when items are in the last column, they will stay there. If I were reviewing 22 items in my "Two Reviews" column and only got through 12 of them, hitting "Skip to Summary" would place those 12 in the "Three Reviews" column, and leave the other 10 in the "Two Reviews". However if I'm reviewing items in my "4+" column, the ones I've completed for that session have no where to go sad And this is where I have the issue the most... when I'm reviewing everything once or twice a week.

Wait. You're clicking on the NOT due stack? That would be your entire problem right there. The site isn't designed for you to do that. You're supposed to wait for the cards to become due (they form an orange stack) and then review them as the expire. It's spaced repetition. http://kanji.koohii.com/learnmore.php

@naha_hana : Every single flash card review is handled right there and then when you answer them and the next one appears. The only time it does not update the database straight away is when you get that timeout error, in that case the last card you were answering will reappear later as the server didn't see it.

When the error appears, you can press F5 to refresh the browser page and it will carry on with the rest of the cards. You may have to login again but otherwise anything reviewed before the timeout is already updated in the database.

It is never mandatory to go to the Summary page. The Summary page is just that, when you go to that page all reviews are already processed. There is no need to sit through any amount of cards, you can stop anytime you want.

There are eight stacks total. The last one visible is labelled "Four reviews or more". f a card is in the 5th stack and you succesfully answer it, it may go to the 6th stack, but will appear in the "Four reviews or more" pile. So it may seem like it didn't budge other than going from orange (expired) to green (not due for review), but it has been updated and scheduled for a later review. Only when a card is in the 8th stack, it gets scheduled for the highest interval, and stays in the same pile.

wow thank you for your replies. I read that "Learn More" page before I started, but did not have enough of an understanding yet to grasp it, and forgot to go back once I started! That really helped.

So, I should just be studying new kanji each day until I log in and see an orange column? I suppose I just get worried I will forget what I learned, so I try to review everything as often as I can in order to see if I'm doing to much, or can take on more. Do any of you have a pattern as far as when to add more or just review what is there?

Thank you again ^_^

It's a person to person thing. Most people advise to review everything that comes up in any particular day, and also add a set number of new ones every day.

See, since it's spaced repetition, you're not supposed to worry much about taking on too much, at least not from a memory perspective (it's a valid concern from a work-load perspective). Once cards are in the 4+ boxes, it will be months before you see them again, and that's fine, because that's the point - the system is supposed to ensure that you remember them over such long stretches without review. This also means that, right now, your spaced repetition is completely messed up, since cards you've been looking at every couple of days are in box 8 right now, which means that, on their own, they won't expire for.. I forget the limit on this site, 10 months or so? But since your repetition hasn't been spaced until now, the transfer to long-term memory that's supposed to occur to let you remember something over 10 months hasn't. Since that's a bit of a problem, it might be advisable to delete all of your cards and start over again with the spaced repetition in mind, only reviewing due cards. It'll be a lot to review at first, but since you've apparently been doing everything every few days anyway, it's probably not more than you can handle, and it will quickly dwindle down as they get spaced from each other.

Only review the orange piles. The green piles are green because they don't need to be reviewed. If you review them, you mess up the whole idea of the site and the kanji won't enter your long term memory.
