I started studying kanji the Heisig way a week ago and I'm amazed at how well it works. I've found that the hardest kanji to remember are those for which you simply can't remember what the story was. Given the story it's usually pretty easy to write it.

For example, I used to have a hard time with 只 because I couldn't connect the world 'only' with any story. So anyway, I got to the crown radical part and I could already foresee superfluous (冗) as a tricky one to remember, but then I read the story for crown (冠) that went:

Remember the SUPERFLUOUS CROWN that flew away in the WIND? Well now the king is saying "i should have had the thing GLUED to my head from the BEGINNING"

And that story stuck marvelously! Now I got 2 otherwise hard kanji in the bag for having them in the same story. I used the same technique for refreshing (涼) and scenery (景).

It gets very hot during the Summer in Tokyo, so when it rains (water) it gets very refreshing. On the other hand, the days when the sun is up are great to check out the scenery of the city.

It seems to be proving very useful for kanjis that would otherwise be difficult to find a connection with a good story.

It's exactly this kind of overlap of stories that makes Heisig's system very efficient and effective for learning kanji. I wouldn't use the exact same story for two kanji, but it you can use the ideas for one to help with the other you'll find your progress smooth and easy. Good luck with your efforts

This is similar to the kanji chain technique where you not only connect several kanji in one big story, you connect several (all) readings to them as well.

If it works for you, use it more. Personally, I think I would dislike having to spend so much time memorizing the stories, I prefer visual images in my head where I see a scene rather than a long story.
