This isn't necessarily wrong.  Quoting Jay Rubin, "Plain vanilla 分かる does not take objects --except (there's always an exception), as Makino and Tsutsui point out, "when 'non-spontaneous comprehension' is involved... in which the experiencer makes a conscious effort to understand something," e.g., ジャックはリンダの気持ちを分かろうとしない。" ("Making Sense of Japanese")

I kind of feel bad not responding to this thread 8 months ago. There's a slight thrill of seeing where you've been and how far you came. I think I was at 1500 words in Core 2k. I'm certain my goals back in Jan 2009 were to finish Core 2k and 6k, Tae Kim sentences, with stuff after that being a bit fuzzy.

Now, I don't have goals to be accomplished in a set time. Now it's:
-Do three hours of study a day on average (usually after work).
-Give benchmarks to gauge where I'm at along the way (Anki stats, writing and pronunciation samples).
-Keep track of how I did it (this forum).

Current goal (well, game plan) is "fully comprehend" five more dramas and two movies, intermixed with doing Kanzen Master Two Sentences (groups of 100) while sticking to the guidelines above. Would like to do 4 dramas and 400 sentences of Kanzen by 2009 though).

Since there are 3 months left of 2009, I want to put my goals too.

Finishing Tae Kim's (I'm at verbs particles lesson) and do as much as possible from KO list in Smart.fm while balancing between my university's hard courses and Japanese studying (a hard goal to be honest).

I really hope to be satisfied when I reread this topic in 2010

My remaining goals for 2009:

(Finish Core 6000.) EDIT: Done as of 4 October.
(Finish adding the 旧字体漢字 to my RtK deck.) EDIT: Done as of 24 September.
Reach a total of at least 3500 漢字 in said RtK deck.
Add sentences containing all remaining 常用漢字 to my sentence deck.
Finish reading 不思議の国のアリス.
Finish reading マリア様がみてる.
Read at least one more novel.
(Stop getting 朗らか wrong.) EDIT: Possibly done?
