Why is this? I did my reviews yesterday in the morning, there where about 40 expired cards, and now, day after in the evening, all of a sudden I have 158 expired cards :L

Out of interest, how many from each stack?

Don't forget, if you did something like 200 kanji in stack 1 (say a mass review), you're going to have bundles of reviews later: In 2-3 days (100, 100); then in 5 to 7 days (33, 67, 67, 33); then in 12 to 16 days (7, 20, 33, 40, 40, 33, 20, 7).

So the cards are being spread out thanks to a nice algorithm Fabrice set up (so you're not getting 200 cards in 3 days, then in 7 days, then in 14 days. etc), but you're still going to get bunching. In addition, you are adding new cards and reviews from older cards are coming up.

Hope this helps.

It all depends on how many cards you have and about when you last reviewed all those cards. If you add a bunch of kanji at once, then you will tend to review them all at around the same time. Sometimes this may overlap with other occasions where you have cards bunched together like that, and the result is you get a bunch of cards expired at once. Eventually, assuming you do your reviews every day or close to it, this situation will smooth out and it won't happen anymore.

I was on a real rollercoaster when I did this site because I started with 1827 kanji (I switched to here from SuperMemo after I was already towards the end of RTK1), so often my workload would trickle down to only a few cards a day, then it'd pile up again to hundreds of kanji a day, and eventually it'd go back down again. I think it's finally stopped doing that and is behaving pretty normally now.

hey, thanks for the info, I think my palms started sweating when I saw this huge orange pillar of expired cards big_smile I mean, I add about 55 cards a day, usually I do most of them in the morning, and maybe some leftovers (about 10 kanji) later in the day, and then in the evening I review the cards I added that day, along with the expired cards from earlier (and usually its about say 40 expired cards) but, last two days I missed out adding new cards completely, but, never the less, I did review expired cards, just because of the fear from those those huge orange columns...and still I got them...

For Nukemarine: 97 expired in the first (1 review) stack, 53 in the second, and, oh great, just one in the third...and there is 50 in the failed stack.

By the way, my average "score" at reviewing is between 70 and 80%. On good days/easy chapters, Ill get 95-100%, on bad days/tough sections, Ill drop as low as 50-55%, but its between 70% and 80% most of the time

and, on a side note, completely off topic, I accustomed myself to sleeping 5 hours a night, from about 1AM to 6AM every day, and maybe a short nap here and there during the day, but sometimes not, and it was great, I felt good during the day and got plenty of time for doing kanji, and other stuff...but now, the weather got colder, the heating started, and the air in my room got sooo incredibly dry, and it totally messes up my sleep and my head and everything, I got headaches and stuff, and I had to sleep much longer to get my rest, that is why I slacked with adding new kanji last two days. I placed a wet towel on my radiator...hoping to get back on track as of tomorrow.

btw, is there a topic for random rambling like this last paragraph? There isnt much people in the real world who can understand the toil of going through heisig, not even among my fellow nihongo students who still consider the write-each-kanji-a-gazillion-times method as the only one that works

Getting plenty of good continuous sleep at night is good for your learning.

I reckon making your own topic, something like "What everybody want's to talk about, but nobody cares about", or simillar.

I also reckon you don't forget that you are still a human, not a language-learning machine- if you put everything but japanese aside, if you forget that there are still other things around you, you may end up knowing how to say something, but having no idea what to say. I'm saying this because I believe 5 hours a day is really terribly few, and even though it may seem right now that less sleep means more time, the contrary is in fact true (at least from my experience)- I, for example, was never really able to feel like real me when being sleep deprivated ( and I used to be sleep deprivated a lot).
Also, don't forget to go out once in a while wink

Lack of sleep is a crime

We can discuss the sleeping thing on some other topic, but I assure you, it is not some nazi selftorturing self discipline thing, I got accustomed to it really slowly, and, as in the last two days, when Im not feeling like it, I just simply sleep longer, no problem, and in fact, my concentration during the day got a lot better... but, I am not excluding that there maybe is something wrong with the whole thing, just discovered something called cortisol :s. anyway all of this is coming from someone who used to wake up at 3pm a few years back big_smile

Thanks for your concern, will be opening a random topic soon, every forum needs a topic for random thoughts
