Regarding the last news post on the homepage, I don't have screenshots yet, I'll try to post some soon.

However I thought if there was ever something about the layout or usability that could improve the site for you, now is a great time to remind me about it!

I'm posting this because I am redesigning the study page, and suddenly I remembered somebody asked for a search button there to make it easier to use on the Wii browser, so I'll add a button there. If there are other tidbits like that on iPhone, or other mobile devices fire away. I can't promise I will address all of them during this redesign phase, but there are certainly some issues that I can best address now.

Perhaps an option that lets you choose where you jump to after you click the 'learned' button.

Many times, there's been a few kanji using the same primitive -- close in number -- that I have trouble with. As soon as I click 'learned' on the first, I get jumped back to the lowest numbered one, and have to open up the 'view all' box again.... go to the kanji again...

Very exited about the “big, bold, colourful” redesign and eager to see some test pages!

I wonder whether it would be possible to include also the primitives in the database. This would not only require some adjustments to the script (given that primitives are not numbered in the book), but also design-wise, making it necessary to reference images where characters are missing. Although most primitives are now encoded in the latest Unicode standard, not all fonts have them.

I’m not sure whether stroke order has been discussed here. Probably there are some free/cc-licensed resources out there to be included in the study section such as the Wikipedia stroke order project. (With respect to a future Traditional Hanzi section, there is a plethora of material available on the Taiwanese Ministry of Education website which could be linked to, including flash animations and free standardized fonts. Maybe there is something similar for Japan.)

I'm looking forward to seeing the changes, though I wish I were close enough to finish RTK1 before the website redesign.  Then I could say, "Everything was different back when . . ."

In the study section, I would like to be able to hide the other story options once I've added a story to a kanji card.  It can be confusing or distracting to see many stories when flipping through failed cards.

The only thing I can think of is the fact that the quote and edit buttons are at the top of post rather than at the bottom like on most forum I've visited. I got used to here, but I made a few mistakes in the beginning.

how about a java app that makes it easy to use on a cellphone or make it kind of like khatzumemo (see alljapaneseallthetime.com to see what i mean)

Hey, some of can say that!  I remember when there were only a few stories to choose from for each Kanji.  There weren't even stars back then!  Also, there were some real crazies on the forum back then.  smile

On topic, hope to see what the redesign brings.  Will Trinity be a part of it Fabrice?

It would be really great to have a more prominent link to Trinity.  I know it's still not the final version, but I almost forget how to get to it before I've had my morning coffee ;-)

@suffah : No, I am "freshening up" the web site. It's something I wanted to do for a long time. I will not be doing any major functional updates during this time. Perhaps many users don't mind the site as it is, at least I hope nobody will want the old site when the redesign is live! wink

It's a graphical redesign, but if I can improve the layout in places that's what I want to do. For example I am improving the overal navigation, right now between log in and log out it's all mixed up. Making the donation link more obvious as some users who were looking for it didn't see it, etc. I also want to add a Japanese Learning material page with affiliate links, at least try it out. The homepage also will feature the book prominently.

@transalpin : I can't include the primitives. Heisig and the publisher are ok with the site so far as it does not list primitives. Besides even adding the "radicals" would be outside of the boundaries of this site imho. If I was to do that I might as well leave RtK altogether and create a fully online kanji course. I don't have either the energy or motivation to do that. Working on the chinese version (if I get the green lights) would be a fun project on the other hand, and that's something I want to do on a fresh site (the redesign).

Many possible building blocks for RTK1 are found in RTK3.  Perhaps a small FYI in the corner of the box might be an option as an alternative to the given primitive for those who wish to do all 3007.

It would be nice if the report ! was directly linked to the user's email as a convenient way to give feedback.

Or, when you go to view stories you can see the reason for report right there. That would be much better than email. (Unless there is are plans for PMing in the future.)

Also asking user to provide a reason would make them aware that they have hit the report button if they do it by accident.

Would it be worthwhile putting a "Home" under the the top right yellow logo on the forum page (like it is on the main page)?  That way people who "fly in on Google Air" (as Fabrice put it) would be sure to check out the information on the main site. I realize there's a pop up, but I seem to recall a few posters in the past who weren't aware of the RTK book or site.

I do like current design very much. It is very unique. Current yellow background is also very nice.

i second playadom.
it would be very usefull to stay at the numer you last clicked "learned" on
for example if you click learned at kanji 1102 all the failed kanji below 1102 should not be visible in the list until you decide might otherwise.
a "..." button at the top of the list might do this trick.

the way it is now is very bad when you want to relearn failed kanji that are not on the top of the list.

Seconded.

Love layout etc my only gripe is that  I can do reviews using EZweb (Keitai web browsing). I can review failed kanji but can`t flip any cards or anything.

I think MANY people would appreciate the ability to do this. I spend a lot of my commuting time on on my phone, and it`s always when I review my failed kanji. If I could do that days reviews on my phone as well it would mean I could reserve time at home for new kanji and not have to wait till I got home to do my reviews.

I know you said you`re not aiming to do any big overhauls but this would be simply awesome.

hello, it is great to be back on this site ? after a loooooong pause (blush): i took up my kanji study again and also use this siet on my ipod touch. i know you are working on a graphic redesign, but i was wondering if it would be possible for you to have a look at the study page: on an ipod touch/iphone it is not possible to browse by number: you need to hit the enter key to start the search, but that does not work on iphone/ipod touch (or am i doing something wrong?)

Hya nilfisq, I will add this button.

@Thora : since the header will be new, I'll be able to fix that as well.

Do you think you could add an 'undo' button to the reviews? Anki has one.

The mistakes I make in marking a card every so often probably get worked out in time by the SRS, but a little extra accuracy won't hurt.

Maybe you could make the flip and no-yes-easy buttons closer to the sentence/vocab item/kanji.  Currently it's kind of far away, and I have to be zoomed out pretty far (on my Windows Mobile phone) just to be able to click the buttons.  Since it is purely style, and that's all you're changing right now, I thought I might make the comment.

As for the sentences page, would there be any way to make the column width scalable?  I mean it would be awesome if I could scale it right down to my phone screen size (640 x 480).  You know? Now that I think of it, maybe there could just be a mobile version of this site! (I don't expect this at all, because it would probably be a lot of work, and the majority of visitors are obviously not using a mobile, so I wouldn't expect you to cater to the handful of us out here.)

Fabrice,

I agree, an Undo button would be great in the Review area.  But if that's too much work, a little change in the placement of the 'No/Yes/Easy' buttons might aleviate some user's problems as I think they are currently too close together.

Perhaps you could put the 'Yes' and 'No' buttons on either side of the card and have the 'Easy' button under the card.  I usually rotate the iPhone horizontally and click with my thumbs.

On the Study area, I think you've already mentioned adding a Search button - that would be great!

The area I often have trouble with is the "Star/Report/Copy" story buttons.  Again they are too close together in my opinion.

Anyway, thanks again for a great site!

I suppose this depends on everybody individually, but I use the keyboard for reviews, so my problems don't stem from placement -- but from actually hitting the wrong button.

Quite a number of pages on the site suffer from the horizontal scrollbar problem. The kanji review page for instance, has a huge, fixed-size left margin. Basically, the pages on this site don't adapt themselves to the width of the browser window.

yeah, the search box on the study page causes a big left margin that means scrolling left and right to do a search and to see the results.  it could just be at the top, or use a fluid layout which would float it to the top if the window isn't wide enough

a clear button as well as an enter button for the study page would also help sometimes

In the study section I'd find it useful if it were a bit more obvious as to which stories had been starred by myself. Perhaps they could automatically be shown at the top of the list. This would save me from having to copy unpopular stories which I've liked into my own box so I don't lose track of it.
