The new one doesn't make use of that cache, but I don't know how to make it clear the old one automatically.

Bumping this thread to see if there are any new alternatives and what the progress is on the iPhone, iPod Touch, Android or anything else I dont know about.

I was in the same position as you. I was going to put the daijirin 2 on it and then copy the definitions into cards on Anki for a mobile learning tool. But I was told that it can't copy paste, and I couldn't get the daijirin 2 to work, so I decided not to.

You need Ankimini for images and sound, which won't run on a 2g.

iDic does what you expect it to. It reads EPWING files. There's no select/copy so you can't jump between words. It does keep a search history though. Daijirin 2 works fine on mine.

I don't think there are any plans to support inputting cards on Anki. I can't imagine it anyway, it would be fiddly as hell. Not to mention copy+paste is not even on the horizon for some ridiculous reason known only to Apple. If that's a priority you'll be better off with a mini laptop or something.

Does anyone know if there is any plans to implement sounds and images in iAnki? If not I would have to get a iPod Touch 1G as it doesnt seem like there is any progress on jailbreaking the 2G.

How good is Ankiminis sound and image implementation? I want to use it to review the iKnow sentences I have ripped.

Wow it looks like the official Daijirin has word jump. That makes it good enough to replace my denshi jisho. I'd really want to try it first though, and it won't even let my look at it with my Australian iTunes account. Edit: nevermind, that other price was for comparison. It's a lot cheaper than the paper version, 2,500円!

Looking more at replacing my Casio XD-GP9700, it seems like there's also a 大辞泉 available. It's not nearly as good looking as the 大辞林 though and instead of word jump you get some lame puzzle games for 2000円. Awesome.

The 研究社 one doesn't have jump either and it's only the 中辞典 version. I'd definitely stick with iDic for that one. A JE dictionary doesn't really need jump anyway. The 大辞泉 lacking it is unfortunate though. There's also a 漢字源 available for approximately way too much money. If it had handwritten input it would be different. I'll have to wait and see.

I'll probably buy a Japanese iTunes card and make a fake account after Christmas and get the 大辞林. I'll post a comparison to the Casio here in case anyone else is interested.

FYI bot my copy of 大辞林 from the standard US iTunes.  Just do a search for 大辞林.

Think it was $21.99.

So despite the slower processor, lack of internal speaker and the other nice little upgrades if we want sound on Anki - we need the iPod Touch 1G right?

Sorry but no.  The non-Jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch are restrictive; that's why you can't run Ankimini on them.

Since I couldn't run Ankimini on my iPod Touch 2G, I made iAnki which uses various hacks to make it possible to review Anki on non-Jailbroken systems, but there are some restrictions that can't be hacked around, like playing audio.
