I once added a frequency rating to the three-thousand odd 四字熟語 on Haitani's list (Kazelee's link, above), i.e. I rated them all from A to F where:
A = very common, nearly all Japanese adults know it
#
#
F = Nobody knows it
It's not perfect, but is still a useful guide. (If you want a copy of the file, email me)
For Example sentences with English translations, check out the following:
1) ALC approx 300 common 四字熟語
2) 118 四字熟語
For my own use, I compiled data from the above into single files.

Awesome stuff, especially the frequency ratings. I've been meaning to start adding these into my pile, but other than 一生懸命, I've also been a bit wary of adding these as well.
Man, if only there was a properly and thoroughly researched frequency dictionary of Japanese that I could find... I know there's that file from Jim Breen's site, but that's just a data dump from a few years' worth of newspapers. I haven't been able to find a frequency dictionary that goes through all media, and picks the top 5,000 words that will serve you best. I admit that KO does a great job at this, but I'd still like a real frequency dictionary.
