Anybody can help me with my connection problem so that I finally can use iAnki. I'm going to sit in the shinkansen for quite a while in 2 days, so until then I'd really need anki on my ipod.

Meanwhile I managed to get a connection somehow, meaning I don't get a "cannot connect to server" message anymore. I still can't access the internet, though, because the connection is too slow. It looks like there's not data transfer between my laptop who serves as router and the ipod. Anybody an idea what I can do about that?

That error message is nothing to worry about.  It should not show again.  Something I need to clean up.

Whenever you sync it'll load new cards depending on what's due for review.  If you don't need to review more than 1000 cards between syncs you should be fine.

Quick Q, does ianki support image files?

I recently added the "Joost" and "Truveo" apps for watching video on iphone.  Vastly better video quality than the built-in youtube app.  Truveo will work on 3G, not only wifii.   Play that favorite variety show, anime, dorama or whatever ad nauseum.

I got that program today. Was quite expensive for 350yen. I mean it doesn't work at all for me. I installed a lot of crap because it was asking me for all that stuff like Bonjour and frame network or something like that and it still doesn't work at all.
I only can import .cbz files (I don't have any comics in that format anyway). The publisher says that you would be able to import .zip and .rar files, but I can't at all.
I use Windows XP and an ipod 2G.

to import files simply drag-and-drop them onto the application, it will accept any files in the following file formats: .cbz, .cbr, .zip, .rar and .pdf (PDF is currently only available on the Mac Client)

Anyone using this app successfully on their PC and can help me?

I bought the Katsuyo verb conjugator for $7, I think.  The scrolling wheel interface is kinda cool, but a bit gimmicky.  It is fun and educational to scroll around and see how the root relates to different endings.  It isn't very efficient for finding the verb you are looking for.  There is no option to search by typing in kana or English meaning, which would be much more efficient.  This is the most glaring flaw in this app.  Further, the app gives English meaning only in the infinitive form.  It would be nice if 行けなかった was translated as "went", instead of just "to go".  That would be helpful in understanding the more advanced conjugations.  So, if you are looking to understand conjugation, you are going to have to look elsewhere to get a basic understanding of the various tenses.  This will only help you look up how to conjugate a verb that you already know the kana for.  It does that one task fairly well, although the navigation is slow.  The best use for this app is just to play with the wheel and enjoy the interplay of kanji and kana.  Anything that improves my Japanese is worth it, and this will make a contribution, but I am definitely dissapointed with the limits of this app.

Well, the Wisdom dictionary is rather expensive.  But of the 3-4 dictionaries I have, that's the first one I use to look up anything.  The reason being, they have an excellent selection of sample sentences in Japanese (but also translated into English):

But there are a couple of drawbacks:
1. Sometimes I have to fall back on an eDict-based dictionary when I can't find a definition in Wisdom.
2. Your Japanese has to be around intermediate+ to use this dictionary effectively (ie it's not good for beginners)

Some sidenotes - if you look at the right frame on that link, it shows some other iPod products.  I also have the Daijirin - that one has a great interface, but is more of a novelty - not quite as useful for me as the Wisdom.  They also seem to have some French-Japanese/J-F dictionaries and a Japanese Law reference.

Their F-J/J-F dictionary looks pretty good (search on 和仏 to find it in the English AppStore).  If it wasn't so friggin' expensive, would have bought it right away.  Now, I'm trying to decide if I just want the F-J or the combined F-J/J-F...

I got iComic for 115yen now and that's the best application I could find for comics so far. It supports .jpg and .png files that are zipped. You can also convert .pdf files to .jpg, zip it and then you have a .pdf reader as well.

It's a shame that I had to spend 380yen for another application that doesn't work for me.

Also speaking of apps for reading, iBunkoはオススメ. I tested a bunch of Aozora Bunko format readers a while ago and that one was the best. Comes preloaded with a ton of books too.

He USES machine speech because he can no longer talk, he never learned English from it (he became disabled after adulthood).
