I have a 2g iPod Touch and no internet at home, but I'm able to sync wirelessly on my Macbook by enabling internet sharing to AirMac devices. Not sure how it would be done on Windows or Linux though.

But concerning iPhone apps, I found this link (Japanese):

http://studyhall.sakura.ne.jp/?p=1449

The guy gives a little review weighing the pros and cons of all of the big dictionaries out there now. I'm considering the Kenkyusha one, but I would really love it to have a save word function. A jump function would be awesome too. I wish these apps had free demos available. Has anyone else downloaded any of these dictionaries?

Will there be a jailbreak for 2G anytime soon?

The group responsible for most of the jailbreaking up to now has said that they aren't even working on 2g for now. Instead they are focusing on iPhone 3G's baseband unlocking.

I think I'm going to get one. How can I find out if my normal calbe modem is suited to be connected with a wireless router or not? I only have a Japanese handbook and just basically have no idea at all anyway *le sigh*

Also, I read the description of iAnki: It says that you can synch up to 1000 cards. Does that mean I can't have a deck with more than 1000 cards or that I can have a huge deck with 5000 cards, but it only will synch 1000 of them?
And what about ankimini's capacy then, I couldn't find anything about it anywhere.

Would you recommend to buy the old ipod touch or 2G?

Call your ISP; they might have a special router you have to use (or at least the firmware is special). When I ordered my internet it came with a free wireless router. I can't use a third party router because in order to get wireless working properly, I have to enter my user ID and password into the router firmware, or else the signal isn't broadcasted.

Your deck can be as large as you want; the 1000 card limit just means that you can only synch your next 1000  scheduled reviews, which is more than enough to get you by until you synch again.

Wah! Sounds complicated. I'll ask one of my Japanese coworkers today to have a look at the handbook and/or call them directly to ask. My Japanese was good enough to talk to the guy who set everything up, but I might even have problems understand what they say in my own language, so ... yeah *g*
I really hope I can somewhat use a wireless router without having to change my internet providers, because right now I have a pretty sweet and cheap deal.

Sounds great, thanks smile

Why not just use iDic and load whatever dictionary you want onto your touch?  Now that the app is legit, I figure it shouldn't be a problem right?

Wasn't aware of that app, looks promising. But I assume the more official apps such as the kenkyusha one provide features and the like. I will def be giving iDic a whirl though once I get a dictionary file downloaded. Does it have a save function?

Just out of curiosity to the people using iDic, what dictionaries do you have loaded on it and what do you recommend?

I need your help again.
I'm looking for a wireless router right now, but as it is all in Japanese I have a hard time PLUS I don't know what exactly to look for.
I have to make sure that the router can be connected to a normal cable-modem.
Can you tell me what I have to look for in order to find such a router?
Would that one be okay? Anything else I should consider when buying a wireless router? (Please note that I'm only buying it because of the ipod touch).

As for the ipod touch: Would you recommend the old one or 2G?

Ehh...  ...that's a switch, not a wireless router.

You need to find something that says:
無線LAN

Maybe you should ask a Japanese friend/coworker who has some technical experience to help you, before you buy the wrong item...

If you have never played with wireless routers before, maybe that friend can help you.  These days, it's much, much easier to set up than before, but you still need to understand some networking basics.

Gah! x___X
Maybe I should go to a shop and ask there to make sure I get the right thing even if that means that I have to pay more.

Well, my friend is back in Germany, but he can access my computer if I allow him to do so. He can handle the settings for me, I guess.

So I need something that says "無線LAN" and how can I find out if I can connect it to my cable modem?

Okay,

I just came back from DeoDeo. I still don't know which wireless router to buy. I did understand all the Japanese, but I still didn't understand what he was saying. (Meaning I would have no clue in my mother tongue either).

Based on what I understood earlier I was looking for possible wireless routers just now.
I really need your help and I need to order it today before midnight otherwise it won't reach me in time (= before winter vacation).

Some facts (I don't know if they're important or not):
I use a normal cable modem right now. My internet provider told me it's okay and no problem if I buy a wireless router. My apartment is super small (aka 1 room). I only want to use the wireless for my ipod touch (2nd generation) which I will order today, too.
My laptop has a w-lan thingie integrated, so I can access w-lan with it without an additional stick or anything.

Is one of the following products the right one?
I want it as cheap as possible because I only need it for the ipod anyway and once I move I probably have to sell it again.

Planex 4,480Yen
Buffalo 6,642Yen
I.O. DATA (+ usb stick) 5,480Yen
I.O. DATA (no usb stick) 4,069Yen
Buffalo (the DeoDeo guy told me this one would work) 6,735Yen

適用回線 : FTTH、ADSL、VDSL、CATV
Does that have something to do with it? x___X I know my current internet connection is VDSL via cable modem.

Thanks so much for your help!!! (which I really need today) *bows*

If you have a laptop with a wifi adaptor then you could just create an adhoc network with that...

My laptop is pretty old. It's a Toshiba Satellite A80-154.
It says the following:

Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG LAN Mini PCI adaptor integrated in Intel® Centrino® mobile technology

So if I understand this correctly, then I can create a wireless connection from my laptop which my ipod could access, right?
That even works although my laptop is only connected via cable modem to the internet and I don't have any access to any wifi here?

That would be awesome and cheap!

The set-up was really easy, but I can't connect at all plus it's asking me for a network key and a password?!

I was told that this set-up wouldn't work. My ipod would be able to access my computer this way, but still wouldn't have wifi access.

So my question from before (which is still urgent) is: which of the listed routers above can I buy. Which of those can connect to a cable modem?

Thanks again.

I have to go to work now, so I can't look further into it, but I really NEED to order it today otherwise it will never come here on time. So please help me smile

I've found this one: Netgear 6212Yen

Description:
同梱内容 : WGR614C 54Mbps 無線ブロードバンド・ルータ、ACアダプタ、Ethernet ケーブル、セットアップ・ガイド、リソースCD、ユーザー登録のお知らせ(製品保証規定を含む)

Ethernet cable, so that means it can be connected to my VDSL modem, right?

It depends how you want to set up your network.  There are two ways:

P = phone socket
V = current VDSL modem
W1 = new wireless router/VDSL modem combo unit
W2 = new wireless router

1. Direct: P <- W1
2. Through your current VSDL modem: P <- V <- W2

Any wireless router will work in the second configuration.  In this configuration, your wireless router looks like a PC from the POV of the VDSL modem.  Your wireless router will forward requests from your laptop and iPod Touch out to the internet.

That Netgear should work fine - I've used them when I lived in the US.  I've had good experiences with Buffalo here in Japan.  I currently use the Buffalo WHR-HP-G.

Wow, thank you soooooooo much for your quick answer. I'm going crazy here, so I'm really thankful (;o;'')

Actually I have no idea what would work the best.
I don't wanna change my internet provider. I don't know if I'd have to for one of the options you named?

What's the least complicated?
Can I connect a wireless router direclty into the telephone box thingie? (btw. I don't have a phone line, I don't have a phone if that matters). I'm not sure how the cable modem connects to the internet. There's only one phone box and that's where the cable goes in (that's confusing as we have 2 in Germany ...)

Would one of the cheaper ones (around 4000-ish) like the Planex or I.O. DATA thingie work, too?

Thanks again *bows*

Oh, and I don't know if it matters, but that's my Nec VDSL modem.
Right now there are no free slots, so I guess the wireless router would be connected to the slot that's right now reserved for the lan cable between modem and pc?

*rushes to work*

1. You don't need to change your provider
2. Any wireless router will work

Having said that, the differences between the brands tend to be in:
1. Wireless range (that doesn't matter to you)
2. Reliability (interference with wireless phones, etc...)
3. Ease and flexibility of software set-up (different encryptions, packet forwarding, etc)

In the past, I've had issues with Reliability (signal drops, etc...) - that's why I don't mind paying a little bit more for known models that work well, but you might get lucky with a cheap one - just because a model costs more doesn't necessarily guarantee it will work better.

-----------------------

That's correct - the wireless router will take the place of your current pc.

Windows has internet sharing features iirc.
