Using the magic that is Anki, I like to do my SRSing on the go, while at work, on the toilet, walking down the street, etc (as well as all the time I'm at home) - yes, I lead an exciting life.
For all those who have been frustrated by western Nokia phones and how they just refuse point blank to display Kanji (just those irritating unicode boxes), here is how I solved the problem...
The essence:
Nokia release phones all over the world, and the languages which come installed or supported on the phone differ according to region. Unless you are from Asia or Australasia, you will not have support for Kanji on your phone. This method works by tricking the Nokia phone update software into thinking your phone is from a different region by altering the product code of your phone to that of its Asian counterpart. The software then obligingly installs Asian font support on your phone. You will still have English as the phone language, as it is present on all firmwares.
Disclaimer:
If you break your phone doing this (you shouldn't) it's not my fault. If you need someone to blame, I'd suggest the U.S President.
You will need:
- Your nokia mobile phone
- The USB cable to connect to PC
- Nokia Software Updater (NSU) found here. Install it.
- Nemesis Service Suite, available here. Install it.
- TNT Enforcer, from here. Doesn't need installing, it's a standalone exe.
- Nokia PC suite to backup your data before updating your phone (get it here). Install it.
Let's get this show on the road...
-Download Nokia Software Updater, and check that your phone is compatible with it. If not, this method won't work (also, get a new phone, cheapskate!).
-Back up your contacts using Nokia PC Suite, as they all get deleted in this process. you can restore them afterwards.
-Now you need to find the product code for the Asian version of your phone. Go here and look through the (complicated) list until you find your phone model. Then look through the list of codes for one where the region code starts with APAC, or lists the country as Australia/NZ, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan or Asia. There are hardly ever any Japan codes listed, but Chinese character support brings Kanji support (obviously). I used the Australia code.
This step can be complicated, sorry about that. If you struggle to find the correct code, respond to the thread and I'll help.
The part of the code you need is the 7 digit number.
-Connect your phone via USB. Make sure it is switched on, and the keypad unlocked. Open up Nemesis Service Suite.
-Click 'Scan for new device' (the little magnifying glass at the top right)
-Click Phone Info, then click Scan.
-Now open up TNT Enforcer. This little program just enables blocked features in any open program. Click Enable. The word 'Enable' will glow green when it's ready.
-Go back to Nemesis Service Suite. Under the section 'Product Data Edit' on the right hand side, there is the field 'Product Code'. Check the 'Enable' box, then enter the 7 digit product code you found earlier into the field.
-Click 'Write'. It won't seem like much has happened. Press it a couple of times just to be certain! Although nothing appears to have changed, your phone now appears to the PC to be the Asian version.
-Close any other open programs (and make sure your firewall is turned off - it can interfere with the updater and break your phone), and open the Nokia Software Updater. Allow it to update the software. Once it starts, don't touch your phone at all until it's finished! If you do, you can just break your phone permanently. Just let it go through the motions, and when the update is done, your phone will have the new language support.
-Check that the update worked by going to your nokia menu and looking at the language options (Usually Nokia > Settings > Phone > Language Settings > Phone Language). It should have some Chinese characters displayed there. don't change your language, just check that there is a Chinese option.
-Wahoo! Now you can use Anki, Katzumemo or even RevTK on the go! You can also browse japanese websites etc.
-You can now restore your contacts using Nokia PC Suite. Alternatively, take this opportunity to start afresh and make some new Japanese friends! (Those gaijin were only holding you back anyway...)
In the unlikely event that something goes wrong...
If your doesn't show the Chinese language option now, or if when you try to type using the keypad strange things happen, you have probably just chosen the wrong code. let me know and I will help you choose the correct code for your phone.
I hope that's everything. If anyone needs any help at all, reply and I'll do my best.
