Alyks, by the time you hit 1000 sentences (or equivalent in vocabulary and grammar points), I think one should be reading outside sources and watching outside sources. What I meant is that you don't have to mine those sources for sentences to put in your SRS. As you said, we have TONS of spreadsheet sentences to choose from to input now.

By the time I've finished KO2001, I should be 4000 sentences into the SRS (few months from now). In that time, I should have all the grammar points, pronunciation, vocabulary, etc to allow me to pass JLPT 2 (maybe even JLPT 1) if I choose to take it. After that, I might try your movie method (to quickly get the other 1500 kanji into onyomi pronunciation WITHOUT needing a sentence for every one). I might go drama script route also (oh, Kisarazu Kat's Eye, how I want to mine you so bad).

Back on topic, cjs, I hope your roommate and you turn out to have a mutually beneficial friendship. I hope he learns the benefits that Text to Speech and Anki can do for learning any language. Good luck to you both.

When I hit 'reply,' the topic review consists entirely of this argument, which isn't even tangentially related to the OP.

I thought my comment might derail this, but how I originally said it sums it up I think.

Everyone has their own opinion on this stuff: sentences, AJATT, RTK, textbooks, classes, etc.

But the bottom line is that anyone who says you NEED classes (not just recommends) is full of B.S.

Just like if someone said you NEED an SRS to learn a language they would be full of B.S. (What about the tons and tons of people who have learned second languages without them? Not to mention people that existed before computers!)

So, in the end, find a way that works for you and ignore the people who tell you you're doing it all wrong and you'll ultimately fail.

People don't need an SRS to learn a language, but I wish more people would give them a shot.  It seems like any time I try to tell people about how awesome it is to effortlessly remember almost everything I learn forever, the only response I ever get is "Yeah, I was thinking about making some (paper) flashcards.  You know, to drill vocabulary and stuff." I'll be showing my roommate how to work an SRS tomorrow. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good deck for him?

CJ, what I did for the lady I'm currently seeing is put to use the sentences from UBJG. The translated english sentences that is. I ran them through a Text to Speech (male American voice) and got it together pretty quick. Like mine, it's Audio to Production, and Reading to Spoken alound. I altered them a bit for more realistic reading though.

Yeah, she kinda gave up on it. Main reason is she wants to learn Spanish (cue Rosetta v3). I doubt that'll be an issue with your roomate.

Here's the BIG, BIG tip. He MUST go through each, and every sentence (maybe 30 to 50 day) and add definitions/notes for each word or grammar point he does not know. Same thing most people are doing for their Japanese sentences.

However, he did come to the U.S. so maybe UBJG is beneath him. Japanese do normally get 6 years of English class. So, get some scripts for "24" or "Prison Break" and have him mine those. That should be fun and educational.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is UBJG?

Understanding Basic Japanese Grammar. There's a thread about it on this forum. We recently finished putting a majority of the sentences in a spreadsheet format.
