Hi

So I haven't posted much on these forums yet. I've been using the site for a while (I'm up to somewhere in the early 200s. Anyhow enough about me...

I just downloaded Kanji Flip for my iPhone, hoping to defect(!) I spend a lot of time on the tube, and I really wanted an offline solution for kanji learning.

The page on the iTunes store doesn't mention Heisig at all, or really anything much about how the program works, so I thought I'd tell you all here. The program is not set up for Heisig method learning of the Kanji at the moment. It is much more the JLPT school of things. You are prompted with the kanji, to recall the meaning and pronunciations.

If you are looking for an offline Heisig tool, this is not it. Sorry folks. If you are trying for your JLPT, maybe it'll be useful, but I know nothing about JLPT.

I was wondering about flashmybrain for iphone. Has anyone tried that? I'm too tight to spring ?6 or whatever it is on an app I've never used...

Anyhow, hope this is helpful to a few people, and perhaps stops a couple of people needlessly wasting ?1.69 like I did.

Happy Kanji-learning!

Another newbie to the forum here, and I too am looking for an iPhone app for SRS. StudyCards looks interesting... unfortunately, amateurish graphics in their marketing, but the app uses 5 Leitner levels and I see that an RTK series has already been uploaded (haven't bought the app yet, so I can't speak to the quality of the cards or anything).

Their website is www.worklifestudy.com, if you want to go take a look. I'm still on the fence about the app, but it certainly looks like the developer is actively responding to suggestions.

Get Anki and use the web interface for now. I find it's very good on my iPhone, and it lets me review my deck wherever I am. (So long as I can get 3G/Edge or WiFi.) The simple keitai interface has been optimized for the iPhone browser, too, and it loads pretty fast.

I would have to say that I agree with rich_f.  I was looking for the exact same thing that you are as I don't have wireless internet at my school, so I also wanted an offline solution.  However all the programs currently available for the iPhone/Touch just seemed too weak for what I want.  Plus I had already thrown all my eggs into the Anki basket and didn't want to start over making heisig, JLPT grammar, vocab, etc flashcards on another program.  I would say start with Anki now and like rich_f said use the web interface.  It's very good and it synchs with your home PC.  I have read in several forums that Anki might be coming to the the iPhone/Touch and if it does you'll be all set up for mobile SRS'ing!

Is there any word on the Anki iApp progress? Getting a Touch tomorrow. Unfortunately as wifi is hardly anywhere, the anki web interface is mostly useless in this case.
And for anyone who uses a jailbreaked one, is there a way to get dictionary.app on it or any other dictionary software that is good?

From what I read about Anki, and the iPhone/iPod touch, I wouldn't expect a native client any time soon. Unfortunately, because of the restrictions Apple has placed on software development for the iPhone, a lot of work would be required. I plan to keep an eye on the anki discussion threads, though, in case anyone comes up with something. And of course, this only applies to official apps. I don't really follow the jailbreaking thing.

I'm usually not a fan of hacking my hardware,  but if it means getting some study software going (and a dictionary, that would be nice too!) then I might break down.

rich or skinny,

do audio files work as normal when you use the web interface with anki on an iphone?

Actually I'm not sure.  I've just started to build my JLPT grammar decks with it so I haven't added any sounds or pictures yet.  I've heard lots of success with doing that however and look forward to doing that in the future.

rich do you know?

No idea. I don't use sound files for my cards.
