Well has been two weeks so far and I'm at 328 Kanji. School work and Heisig is taking much longer than I originally thought. Didn't think I would only be doing around 20-30 a day, when my original plan was 50. Maybe I shouldn't have overloaded with hard classes this year... Hopefully I'll get done before December.
20-30 a day is a great pace. There is so much emphasis on speed, but quality over quantity man! It's better to do it at a regular steady pace, and make those kanji stick, then to overload, and burn out. I have tried both ways, and I really think 20-30 is perfect, as the reviews will pace nicely as well.
Frame 497 (激), almost 500 kanjis, almost 25% of the first volume! <pat location="back">myself</pat>

You've probably passed the 500 mark by now mypapa12 so congrats! I should be getting their soon enough currently on 450, trying to kick it up to 30-40 a day. Going good so far, let's see if i can keep the pace!

Taking hard classes and doing RTK. こわっ
I'm with Taylor on pace vs speed. Keep it up!

Thank you very much! This encouragement thread is really good for me.

You're going faster than me, I'm at kanji #555, I try to do no more than 25 kanjis every day, and I review a lot (2 Anki decks on my laptop, 2 Anki decks on my desktop computer, kanji.koohii.com and test.koohii.com ![]()
I'm ashamed. See my post right above:
- I was at frame 463 on 17 Sept.
- I'm on frame 545 on 1st Oct.
The good news is that I finished writing a short-story in the last 15 days, which phagocyted all my scarce free time. I'm not even sure I can keep a 10 kanji a day paste. My consciousness starts feeling bad, but I realize harder than ever how hard it is to split your mental energy in-between two such demanding mental activities when you only have 1 to 2 hours or so to dedicate them each day. Any thought?
Yoga, take 10 minute breaks from the other activity for a 10 minute session on RTK. then go back to whatever you were doing. it shouldnt take any longer than a minute or 2 for each new kanji. as for reviews. initial review of each kanji shouldn't take any longer than a minute. if you dont know, look up the story, refresh in mind and move on to the next kanji.
wax on wax off. over and over again every day.
just keep plugging away. this may be easy for me but i have pretty much secluded myself from the known world locking myself away in my basement other than the hour every other day i go running and the 15 hours a week i work at my part time job.
trying to get all of the RTK book 3 finished before i start my job up in japan because 33 hours a week and a social life again will make thiis harder to do.

Wow that's a lot of review lol. But keyword is I try for 30-40 a day but sometimes just can't make it, or sometimes don't do it at all due to my homework. I usually try to make up for it, but it's annoying sometimes. Like this week was 20-30-40-10-40.
I thought I should write on this as an encouragement to my self
. I went on a trip to the USA for 7 days... came back with 225 in my review box. Not bad, except I had learned about 130 kanji on the 12 hour car rides. So its been a month since I have learned any kanji (617 Kanji so far) and it did bring me down... makes me angry than anything but since I have to devote myself to university b/c I have decided to because a doctor = need a higher GPA than now + MCAT in the future. On top of that I am dealing with a nagging addiction that seems to be taking a lot of my time away. So here I am, after spent about 3 hours reviewing another 200 kanji in my review box and I have to brute force 50 kanji in my failed category to finally have all empty boxes so I can finally start new kanji! If anyone needs encouragement It certainly is me b/c anger can only take me so far.
Thanks

I do it mainly because I don't trust my memory and my stories. I'm at 577 kanjis and I wonder whether I should review whole chapters (for example 4 complete chapters reviewed every day would take me 1 week).
Don't fail! YOU CAN DO IT! (oh, that's nothing, I'm just talking to myself)
Use one and only one SRS: review here or review with Anki. Extra review is actually counter-productive: it hurts the stabilization of your memory.
EDIT: let me expand on this a bit. You are going to forget some kanji as you go along. This is entirely normal, so don't sweat it. All you have to do is relearn whichever ones you can't write, which doesn't take much time at all.

Just got to 508 two nights ago! But can never study much on the weekends, SAT study takes priority. Well Anki stats say 508 in 21 days hmm.... another 2 months till I'm done? I better increase my pace during winter break~ Hopefully most of my college apps are done by than and not too much AP homework to do so I can spend all my time on RTK.

Resurrected
The New Year is coming soon, so I figure this would be a good way to help each other stay focused.

I'm at 677, and I'm feeling like this is never going to end
So many people are talking about what you do AFTER RtK, like 2001: A Kanji Odyssey, and Tae Kim. I want to get into that fun stuff, but first I have to finish this incredible task. And it seems like it will never end
Apparently I'm not even at the "hard" part yet, so what's it gonna feel like then!?!? This lesson 23, despite all the sexual-themed stories it allows for, has been largely offputting
I just want to actually learn Japanese, but I guess there's this never ending obstacle to overcome first
Overcoming this is harder than a teenager overcoming the needle -_-

Don't worry about it, we were all there. I had already studied Japanese for a long time when I started RtK so at times it felt extremely boring and I wanted to go back to my old studies. Trust me, it's worth it.
As for the hard parts, I personally don't think it changes all that much. The first few chapters are very simple but after that the book is pretty even I'd say. Some chapters are harder than others but that's about it.

Ugh i kind of feel like that also right now, although I'm a "little" farther ahead, at 1700 right now. I know it's only 300 more and i'll be done soon but for the last two weeks i just can't bring myself to add anymore. With schoolwork piling up and then more college applications it does get annoying -_-;
On the hard aspect of it, I agree with Tobberorth. It doesn't really get that much harder. Their might be a few kanji in particular that just don't work but overall it goes pretty smoothly throughout.
I guess I'm a little different. I have no problem going through RtK, but I'm more unsure of how to go on next. I'm only around 250 kanji left until the end of RtK1, but seeing manga/novels/stuff in Japanese and not knowing how to read them is a discouragement for me. I know I'm supposed to be encouraged by recognizing the kanji, but not knowing how to read them or not knowing whatever keigo that are associated with the kanji actually make me realize how many readings that I would have to learn in the coming years.![]()

Cheer up
Reading is a total mind**** straight after you've just finished RTK. It comes to you in time with vocab and grammar. I strongly suggest the sentence approach via something like core2000 or KO2001 for your first 2000 - 3000 vocab words. After that tbh it's easy enough to ditch sentences and just add vocab items to your deck because you can read enough to actually want to read Japanese in your day.
You'll get there.
I'm starting back up again...after like 3 months of nada. -_-;
I feel bad.
And lesson 18 is kicking my butt....gah! I must pull through!!! I shall be finished before junior year is over! I must!! \( *o*)/
lesson 23
... but I'm one page away from the end so I must persevere.
I am at #735 and progressing slowly but surely
It just takes consistency. Even studying 5 or 10 new Kanji a day is better than waiting for a week and doing 20.
Good luck everybody!
I'm beginning to be able to read names! I haven't studied specifically for this is just been through exposure but I feel like i'm starting to make a break through. It's only the tip of the iceberg still though.

So it's pretty much just another set of reviews and SRS like this for a while more? I hope I can take a few more months.
I'll keep the next step in mind, I haven't specifically pointed myself in a direction after RtK1. :\
It looks like I'm in need of some encouragement:
I started RKT in the beginning of this year. I had reached #1317 but I ran into a problem... Due to RTK boredom and my lack of motivation I stopped RTK in June and had plans to start up again in September, but school got in the way and I never could get back into it. Now, I have come to the conclusion that I NEED TO FINNISH RTK NO MATTER WHAT AND I WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO FINISH. Since I have not studied in so long, and I know I forgot most of the Kanji I learned, I have started the process all over again. I'm moving at a slow, but steady rate of 10 per-day/other day. Whenever I feel like adding Kanji I'll do so but I review everyday. So far, since I just started a few days ago, I've only gotten up to #50 but I say that considering I'm proud of my progress.
I'm really disappointed in myself that I stopped RTK, esp since I was so into it, and it made me really upset what I became burnt out, but I was to finish really bad. To me, it is part of my future and where I see myself, so I need to keep going. I know I can do it this time, I will let nothing stop me. I need to look forward! One. Step. At. A. Time.
Kay
