one without lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrew1qwH2oU
one with lyrics: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm9490647
!!:D

By 'lyrics' do you mean 'vocals'? ;p

You could try Googling for 'Japanese chiptunes'... such as: http://www.seekjapan.jp/article/jz/2515 … une+Albums

Man I am SO glad I have a jpopsuki account! Thanks to some of these recommendations i've basically tripled the amount of songs I've got big_smile

For some [stupid] reason youtube is NOT working at all for atm so you'll just have to look them up yourself but here's a few more good bands that I'm really into these days.

ONE OK ROCK
STARBOARD
Apogee
The Local Art
Me-Al Art
Uplift Spice
Veltpunch

Yeah Youtube is so gay lately. Buncha [homosexuals]. (Gay = bad in case lurkers were wondering. Don't be a [homosexual]! This has nothing to do with homosexuality, though.)

[Edited by 風

Note: Gay as bad comes from insulting a man/rule/etc who goes by the book. He/it doesn't do what a guy would "normally" do and thus, he/it is gay. Ex: Mr. Lanky wouldn't give me a B grade because he says I have a terrible attitude. Oh, he's so gay. Perhaps no harm is meant in using it, but that doesn't change what it is.]

Is that a good site? I checked it out, and registration is invite only.

Anyway, I still highly recommend Ikimono Gakari (いきものがかり).

Actually.................... it kind of is. Every other recommended video features a gay vlogger.

It used to be, but now I think it's completely worthless. In the past, I could find almost anything there, but last time I used their v2.0, I couldn't find anything that wasn't essentially a brand new release.

It does though - it's the same word, and therefore it associates "gay" with badness. I'd rather you didn't use that term - thanks.

Forgive me for asking and ruining a possibly deadpan response with perfect pitch, I was going to give you the benefit of the doubt, but this is the Internet, after all, and even Jarvik7 misses things sometimes: You do know I was being sarcastic, right?

Edit: Oh, I posted my previous series of comments (http://forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?pid=88340#p88340) on the topic as nest0r, so I guess the clues aren't as strong. Damn aliases.

No problem. And kazelee, I'm debating whether to assume your partial and/or incomplete moderation and editor's note was just a parody of specious revisionism that excuses using 'gay' as an insult, rather than an actual attempt at etymological authority.

Cool. If you're gonna debate it, it would probably be a good idea to start a new thread. This one has been derailed enough. smile

Eh? I said I was debating an assumption. An internal debate (tactfully refraining from mentioning which direction it went). Topic-wise, there's nothing to debate, as I am completely, irrefutably correct in the things I pointed out briefly here and extensively in the above-linked thread. smile /modesty

@IceCream - You should make your own Japanese chip tune music using text pasted into Vocaloid or something, over 8-bit samples. ;p (Inspired by: http://tinycartridge.com/post/119457840 … lbum-8-bit)

I have to second offense of the word 'gay' being used negatively. You don't use discriminated minorities as a negative slang term, that's just really poor taste :\
As a learner of Japanese and someone who respects the culture, would you not be a little unhappy if people started saying "jap" to mean "shitty" and other phrases?
Just replace "gay" with other words and you'll see how offensive and derogatory it is to the people group:

"Wow, that party last night was totally chink man, it sucked"
"That music is so nigger"
"I got an F on the test because the teacher is totally Jew"

:\ it's not okay.

Maaan, this thread is SO cheese dip. I'm not sure whether that's a good or bad thing, though. Kinda depends on the kind of cheese, or brand of dip if it's premade. I could sure go for some Velveeta right now, I can tell ya that much!

Some goodness I've been into lately:

Fox Loco Phantom - 妄想ガール http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dq-v66tK_0 (high energy indies alt rock)

朝生愛 (Aso Ai) - Islands (King Crimson cover) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcz4gMXFssE (singer/songwriter; very mellow and PAINFULLY scarce on Youtube. This particular song is from a split with Wata of Boris and but a shadow of her album material)

101A - 雪の世界 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ9zIFgOFPQ (sort of experimental, slightly gothic rock; sometimes a little on the dark side)

té - 如何に強大な精神や力といえども知性なくしては『無』に等しい。 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHhJ_azqAsA (instrumental band, but who needs lyrics when you have song titles like that!)

Envy - A Warm Room http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5qPsCd0CM8 (because 神々 knows I haven't raved about this band enough already)

If you like Flower Travelin' Band, check out: http://www.inthepines.org/blog/index.php?itemid=190 - It's a totally innocent list of the top 50 albums from the Japan Rock Sampler. Les Rallizes Denudes' Heavier than a Death in the Family is only placed at #3, pah.

Oh and it's not quite the same, but if you're into the whole psychedelic mantra/noisy rock stuff (that's what I remember of Flower Travelin' Band, hehe) check out another Japanese artist(s), Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO.

I was going to recommend the Habit of Sex blog for some truly interesting '80s/'90s Japanese music, but looks like it got gutted and had to start over, not much there now...

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaOf82Ze … re=related

Heh, I've listened to so much music, I think this is the only way I can recommend it--reactive associations, tangents... otherwise when I think 'Okay, Japanese music... ' my brain just crashes.

While I'm at it, I would recommend Kashiwa Daisuke or Motoro Faam--I often want to but refrain because of the lack of vocals, but since I'm going through my 2008 music discoveries, I might as well mention Mutyumu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg5Qarba … re=related - It's like Noble/Schole records meets Die Form or (old) Theatre of Tragedy... (Actually the male vocals on that PV remind me of Soil & Pimp Sessions.)

I've come across it in the past and it was registration only back then too but of course (like it is now) registration was closed. I was lucky enough (and I do feel genuinely lucky) to remember it a couple of months ago when I was looking for something but couldn't obtain it so I went there and registration was open. Inviting is at present disabled.

Personally there's nothing I CAN'T find on there! It's leagues easier than trying to find stuff any other way. I've downloaded about 40 CD's from there so far and on every artists page it has a recommendation graph type thing that I've found so many more good bands through. Love it.

@the gay debate:

Don't give a shit, the world is TOO P.C these days and that's depressing. My usage of it was a bona-fide 使い道 and that's that. There are countless times where it's used as an interjection to express feelings of disappointment arising from circumstances being other than what one expected. "Being gay" in this case refers to something temporarily creating such a situation and is part of the English language.

Let's say under normal circumstances a person is straight (that's a fact) and so when you see someone you just assume they are. Lets say it's a girl you like and you ask her out but she's a lesbian (gay) and so she won't go out with you and that leads to disappointment because she's gay. So the feeling here is that it was supposed to go smoothly like normal but owing to circumstancing out of the ordinary it didn't work which lead to disappointment. One can see how gay could refer to such a situation.

Applying the above logic I don't see how things like "Jap" "Chink" ect fit the bill.

It's just as pointless for me to type all this as it was for anyone to comment on it in the first place. It won't change how either of us think, feel or act. So let's keep it that.

Yeah, they're worth mentioning a few more times.  I've heard them compared to Miranda Sex Garden which I guess is as good a description as anything else.  Just wish they'd play again...  In the mean time トロベリーソングオーケストラ are not entirely dissimilar and are actually playing a few times this month (also limited express will be in town this month too!)

Ha, I actually edited my comment to remove that recommendation when I noticed the kanjified name in the first page of this thread. Guess I'll unedit now. And Strawberry Song Orchestra looks interesting!

@mezbup I get it, 'gay' just means 'negatively abnormal' to you. Not insulting to gays at all! At any rate, most people who are the type to use the word 'gay' to mean 'bad' I already assume are at, ah, a certain level of personal development to have used it in the first place, so don't worry, I don't point out the perpetuation of bigotry through language for the sake of the people I'm reacting against, I'm just trying to balance the atmosphere and stand up for my principles in general, hoping to get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I see someone who thinks the same as I do on the topic (such as shirokuro or Aijin).

Neojaponisme had a roundup of the last decade in jpop recently, which had a lot of stuff I hadn't heard. Most of it was a bit meh, but I really liked Shugo Tokumaru.

I like Cocco too (that song in particular I like the contrast between the bouncy chorus and what the lyrics are actually saying...)

(PS: I'm with nestor on the 'gay' thing. My immediate reaction when I read that first comment was "wait, what? I thought mezbup was one of the good guys?" Regardless of what meaning you personally attach to the word, if you use it like that then a chunk of the people reading are going to form seriously negative opinions about you... Plus it derails the thread :-))

Politically correctness serves a function. Some people tend to over do it. This is not one of those situations, though. Many were offended, not an overly correct few.

I could argue with you here (the English language part), but I'm not going to.

Interesting.

Aijin mentioned jap, chink, nigger, and jew. You stopped at chink. I could be speculating here, but I think you realize the power of these words and that is why you chose to omit them. You chose to censor yourself when the words in question were blatantly offensive and yet refuse to bend on the word gay. This means that you do employ a certain level of P.C. I believe you do realize that a single line of logic doesn't remove all the offenses associated with a word. I believe you do realize there is truth to what Aijin has said, even if only a little. I believe that if you chose to extend your PCness to the word gay, even though using it has become habit, it would be a sign of maturity.

If you choose not to, well, just try not using it here... please. smile

Think about it for a while. I have faith in you.
