So there's been mention of the amount of effort it takes to maintain and improve the site. One way we can help is by donating, of course. However, another way we could potentially help is by donating time, or more properly patches.

Granted, it's certainly not trivial to move a project, particularly a single-developer one, into a state where patches can efficiently be accepted, but I would be willing to volunteer time to assist with the process.

Thoughts?

I strongly agree. I don't really see any reason to keep the source code private other than to keep other people from making similiar sites, and because this site is community-based, there wouldn't even be any value in creating a similar site, so that should not be a problem.

Fabrice has stated that he has at least considered making this site, or at least portions of it, commercial.  I think he wants to quit his day job (literally).  That might be at least one reason he hasn't asked for collaborators.

The two aren't mutually exclusive, though I'd certainly be less willing to donate any kind of resource (including effort) to a commercial site; ultimately, this site has two things going for it that are difficult to reproduce: official blessing (or at least permission), and a preexisting userbase. Neither are compromised by an open backend.

yeah, I agree that the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.  But until Fabrice makes a firm decision about which direction he wants the site to go in, it will probably be better for him to avoid asking for collaboration, if not just to spare peoples' feelings.
