Check out www.jdrama.cc which has scripts from some recent dramas captured from the closed captioning. Unfortunately, it seems like this process is somewhat complicated, which is why more people aren't doing it.

Edit: These aren't actually subtitles, just scripts though.

Yeah jdrama.cc is well known, I believe they even take requests which is cool.

@yukamina: Rename them to the same as your video file (download raws off d-addicts if you don't have them, I recommend Hana Yori Dango highly) but leave the extension the same. Make sure they're in the same folder. For those that have two files (.idx and .sub) rename both. eg:

Hana yori dango ep01 (704x396 DivX).avi
Hana yori dango ep01 (704x396 DivX).idx
Hana yori dango ep01 (704x396 DivX).sub

Windows Media Player Classic appears to be the only player that can handle the Japanese characters. VLC player, BSPlayer and ZPlayer can't. If anyone knows any other players, I'd be interested.

You need a 1seg tuner, and I believe the character sets cause some problems. I know there was a thread on d-addicts with someone attempting the process and giving up. I'm not sure how hard it is with English, but it certainly seems complicated enough to put people off. As for accuracy, the ones I've seen are on par with English closed captioning. Bridging words are often dropped, sometimes it goes off script seemingly arbitrarily, but overall very close (and it's always obvious when it's not). They're also generally better than dramanote and useful for looking up words/SRSing.

It probably depends a lot on the show. In English, variety shows, quiz shows etc are very off. Scripted shows are much better. It's not at all hard to tell the quality, though, case by case.

(For the record I don't know if these ones come from DVD rips or CC)

EDIT: I now know they're DVD rips. So the relative quality of CC is irrelevant.

That method of capturing CC text is incredibly hackish - more than I could have possibly imagined. Are there no linux drivers for any 1seg tuners?

VLC player also handles Japanese subtitles, at least I've used them. I think all I had to do was use a different font.

By the way, I tested those Japanese subtitles for Death Note from http://kitsunekko.net/JapaneseAnimeSubtitles.aspx in BSPlayer Pro 2.24 and they worked fine, so I guess this player works with Japanese subtitles in general. I didn't even have to do any configuring for it to work, I just renamed the subtitles' filename to match the episode's filename like you said and it was good to go.

Yep, I just reformatted my computer and all players are in fact working fine with the subs, including ZPlayer. So all players seem good, so long as you have east asian fonts installed.

This is going to sound a bit ridiculous, but could anyone point me towards pokemon (season one) exact Japanese subs?

Uberstuber, unfortunately you're going to have to change the timing on the subs manually. Vobsub and VLC (I think) let you do this fairly painlessly. For Densha, I delayed either 15 seconds or added 4 seconds (it changed timing every commercial break). For the second episode, you'll delay it 45 mins x 60000ms or there abouts.

To save effort, I wrote down my delay times and what time in the show to do it for episode 1 (and part of episode 2).

Pain in the butt. However, it's worth it to get exact subs for such a nice show.
