It doesn't seem like anyone has mentioned this but one of the biggest problems with using mnemonics for learning words is that they might conflict with kanji mnemonics. More mnemonics = more confusion. That's why the first 100 kanji are easier than the last 100 kanji when doing RTK.

I've never even been close to having that problem at all. With vocab, kanji, or both.
The trick is location. I was a little confused with all the kanji including "Shellfish" at the beginning. It was because I always imagined the kanji primitives on the same spot on an imagined beach. But once I realized how location can play a major role, I never had that problem again. Even if the kanji images are very similar with only a couple of slight differences, a different location or even a different area of the same place you imagine will ensure you won't be confused.

You're also forgetting that the images are supposed to fade away. When you get to know by heart what you're remembering.

Radical, could you be more specific on what you want advice on?

Specifically I'm trying to find out the best methods for being able to write the words I know without having to drill them all the time. My vocabulary is maybe 4000 words but I've been out of Japan for maybe 2 years now and my writing ability (and recognition) has dropped off the chart. I can still use the words in speech though. It seems that little stories linking the compound meaning to the individual kanji (via heisig keyword or the entire image) would yield the longest retention while being fun and quicker than rote.

So, if anyone has tried this type of thing, I'm interested in any input.
