Just to note, specifying 海外 does not seem to get rid of the requirement for a 携帯電話 address. If we could verify that certain email services let you get around it, then we could make some progress with this whole mixi situation... For me, a gmail.com account requires a jp cellphone email address.
Yahoo.co.jp email addresses or other .jp webmails have the same problem. A friend gave me a free solution that doesn't look free:
You can get a *.jp address for free from Biglobe, a major ISP in Japan, when you register for a "Contents Only Membership".
https://signup.sso.biglobe.ne.jp/cgi-bi … avi/crs_sw
Credit card is required for security reasons, but they won't charge you unless you purchase "Contents", such as downloadable software or movie online.
Access to the mail server is restricted to a proprietary webmail, which is available at https://webry.sso.biglobe.ne.jp/mybiglo … _mail.html
If mail access via Outlook Express or an alike is preferred, membership fee of 210 yen/month is required for a "Dial-up Membership".
I was able to sign up using a Biglobe email address. If anyone wants to add me, I'm here: http://mixi.jp/show_friend.pl?id=18495662

Also, anyone who uses Firefox who has not added Denshi Jisho http://www.jisho.org/ to their search bar needs to do it NOW.
Thanks for that. I will put it to good use!
