That way we can work together in crafting the best story possible and offer feedback to people on whether their story worked or not.

The thing is, some of my stories only work for me. I've published a few that others use, but to be honest, even those don't always work for me.
What's perfect for one person's style of learning may be terrible for another.
Let alone the debates over whom to use for "Person." There are those of us who use Mr.T, and others who use a lot of different people. Same goes for "Thread" and "Fingers." Some of us use personification of tougher primitives as a quick and dirty tool, and others don't like the practice. Personally, I'm all about quick and dirty, so long as it works.

I like the idea. There are many times when I see someone's story, and there are just a couple errors in spelling or grammar or logic or whatever. Just yesterday I saw that in the top story for something that I no longer remember, the word 'threw' was spelled 'through'. I would love it if a little text box would pop up when I report the story, so I can say why I'm reporting it. Then when the story is fixed or defended, the author can get rid of my report, so the red number doesn't always hang around.
I'm not sure if what I'm saying is exactly like what Jack is saying. It kind of seems like what he wants is to be able to have an expandable comments table for every story. I like that idea too, just not as much as the individual, private comments idea.

I don't like the idea of comments attached to stories. I have a hard enough time as it is reading through all the stories and choosing one when I have issues. I know for a fact that I'd obsessively read comments on everyone's stories, when I saw them. I'd rather not have another excuse to procrastinate.
An option to private message the person who wrote the stories could be nice to get them to fix typos and all, but I suspect it could also be annoying if/when the prudes realize that they can send nastygrams to the people who help themselves remember their stories with lewd imagery. I have quite a few non-PG stories and I know I don't want to hear from those who don't like them.

Ditto. I don't think there's any real need for commentary. Now that Fabrice allowed users to easily check stars/reports under "all my stories", everyone should have a good idea of why their stories were starred/reported. Personally, I have edited all of my reported stories to make them either more palatable or more relevant/understandable. My old "reports" have not gone away, but I haven't gotten any new ones. I think that through re-reading old stories that have been reported or starred, one can get a pretty good idea of why it was "reported/starred", without a need for time-consuming commentaries.
Concerning crafting "the best story possible", I think that this is already happening naturally, as users rewrite other's stories and make them better. I've done this myself a few times (see my story for keyword "Magnet" 1390).

These forums already take care of that aspect to a certain extent, especially the "Stories requests" section.

I think story requests are largely unrelated to comments on existing stories.
If there was a link from the story page to the forum when there is a thread on that kanji, or likewise for individual stories, then that would be useful, but having to manually search the forums for each story/kanji isn't practical...

It isn't always possible for someone to work out why their story was reported as they are reported for so many different reasons. Also, it doesn't help at all for what I suspect is the majority of cases, where the user doesn't frequently go back and look for new reported stories.

I wish reports went through some kind of filter, but that would probably take too long. I hate seeing reports that exist because someone is offended by a comment about women, or the palestinians and israelis, or something stupid. I want to see a report because someone is using the wrong primitive, or misusing the keyword. And when I say misusing, I mean *by accident*. It's annoying when someone specifically states that he knows it's not the proper use, but it helps his memory, and he *still gets reported*. Gah, annoying. I think that if reports somehow were filtered by someone, then there would be less clamor for a comment section.
