Ok, so I'm a total n00b and I have no idea what everyone is refering to when y'all are talking about Anki.  Obviously it sounds like a program for the computer, but is it something I should get while using RTK1 (only on Frame 254) or something to get after?  I have nooooo idea.  I await your n00b-pwning responses!  hahaha

I've been using both anki and this site for RTK both at the same time, but I'm about to stop using anki and just focus on this site. Between the two of them, I'm just having to review way too many cards everyday, and they both tend to show me a lot of the same cards on the same day anyways.

I recommend going through the screencasts to understand how it works and what it can do.

With RTK 1, you've got a choice of spaced repetition software to use. You can use Anki, or you can use this site or you can use something else. Each has it's own advantages and there have been a few threads discussing the pros and cons of each.

If you're in Japan, the key advantage of using Anki for RTK 1 would be the possibility of reviewing on your phone. Take a look at the screencast on syncing to find out more.

Indeed, this site is designed only for RTK (until Trinity comes out of Alpha). Anki is very flexible. You can create flashcards that do pretty much anything you want. You can add sounds and pictures. You've got excellent portability (in terms of using several different machines/locations to review the same material) and the author offers outstanding support.

I only just moved to Japan so I haven't got a contract phone yet but I think that AU should work fine. On the Anki website, you put in your phone's email address and it sends you an email telling you how to access the online reviewing functionality using your phone.  It obviously costs money to send an receive data packets on your phone but it doesn't look like much. More details are on the Anki website.

Packets are actually pretty expensive unless you buy a packet-pack or get unlimited data. You can run past １万円 before you know if if you're on the basic data plan.

Yeah, I'll have to be careful when I set up my contract. From the Anki website:

Cost
Most phone companies charge around 0.2yen per "packet". With the flash version, initial startup is about 47 packets (9.4yen). Some phones will cache the application after the first time, so you don't have to pay that fee again.

To view and answer a single card takes about 3 packets (0.8yen). If you practice 100 cards a week, it should cost about 320yen a month. Note that if you are on a "teigaku" plan, all prices will be about half that listed above.

While I don't think that using anki will cost you much money, please check your mobile phone contract before using it a lot.

If you're downloading normal websites with images, yes. The phone interfaces were designed to use the minimum possible bandwidth. Read the page wrightak talked about. :-)

I review about 100 cards a day, and on weekends, most of that tends to be on my phone, with quite a bit on my phone throughout the week.  I don't do much else on the phone via packets but I do send a healthy amount of mail (about 10 messages a day).  I max out my packet shihoudai every month.
