I started the Heisig method several years ago, and at that time, I bought a notebook which I filled with stories till it nearly burst. I also forked out the money for the official Heisig study cards which complimented the book.

By the time I found this website, I was already finished with the book, but I used it daily to review the kanji quickly. I was in heaven.

As many on this site know, there are a LOT of kanji, and despite most of our best efforts, it is hard to review them all and to stay on top of them all, especially when you've walked away from them for a few months. The stories seem to stay, but often times, since you've not seen them in context through regular use, they drift a ways toward the back and the shadows.

I am beginning a heavy reading based Japanese study program, and every day, I come across new words I want to add to my vocabulary lexicon. To learn new vocab words, I first like to tackle the kanji, review them (re-learn them if necessary), and then get their readings down, the words meaning, and how it is to be used in context.

Also, in a weekly Japanese class, I get handed vocabulary sheets which I need to pay particular attention to for the following lessons ahead. I really want to tackle those specific words, and as goes with Japanese study, their kanji.

One thing I have always wished that this site could include would be a way for me to choose specific kanji that I need in my current moments of study and to be able to put them in an area where I could review them as a set.

I have not been able to find that option here. I may only want to review a set of 50 or 100 specific cards, but I end up having to run the whole gambit which dilutes the areas I need to concentrate on. (Words I learned two years ago may have made it to the 5th level a long time ago, but time has cobwebbed them over and fogged their view...)

It would be very nice, for those of us who have finished the book a while ago and just want a focussed review on certain characters, to have the option to tag certain kanji for their own generated tests.

You may want to check out Anki.  It comes with a pre-loaded deck of Heisig cards.  You can suspend all the cards and then un-suspend just the ones you want to work on.

If you just want to review a few Heisig kanji a few times in one shot, you can try out this little applet that I made and was working on earlier today:
Japanese Character Flashcards
It's more or less self-explanatory, but I'm planning to make up a Help file today or tomorrow.

In RevTK this would have involved having multiple named sets of characters, plus some interface to pick what character in what set, in what order...

But then I just realised this could work very well in Trinity.

Judging from your needs, if I understand well, it would be far more practical to make a vocabulary list, and study all the kanji appearing in those words, rather than go through a cumbersome process of hand picking characters and creating "sets" of characters to review.

A priori I think it would be easy to do in Trinity, I could add a simple "Review kanji" option to each Vocab list. Have a look at Trinity alpha's Vocab section, and make a simple vocab list if you haven't tried yet. Then hopefully it will make sense.

However for a quick implementation, it won't affect the overall flashcard status. Which is probably best, as you may want to drill on those?

Let me know what you think.

You know, Trinity was made exactly for these kind of needs. Start with practical material like a vocab list, and then quizz yourself on just that list's readings or kanji... it's coming.

In other words, start with the material you've got, any material, a anime song, or your teacher's lesson, or that book you're trying to read. Learn in any order you want.

..

Back to possible quick implementation, I suppose you also want a list from which you can access each character's study page?

I've implemented a quick kanji review.

Just go to Trinity > Manage Vocab > Vocablists (tab), click "Review Kanji" in any of the vocab lists.

It only picks kanji which have a regular On or Kun reading, like I said quick implementation. Adding kanji appearing in words with irregular readings (eg. 昨日) shouldn't pose problem, I'll try to fix that soon.

You can repeat as much as you like, it doesn't affect the Vocabulary flashcard status.

Trinity was EXACTLY what I had been looking for. In fact, it seems to take every dream I have for the "ultimate study program" and roll them into one.

I once again bow reverently and in awe of your abilities.

I have joined the members for it and will begin to look it over in greater detail in the next few days.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

(And thank you JimmySeal for your two ideas. I played around with anki last night as well as the other applet you linked to.)

Thanks lb, you can post feedback on Trinity in the sticky topic here or by email.

There's no vocablist review yet (all vocab from sentences and lists, is under the Leitner system), I'll try to implement it very soon.
