Ah.. that would an effect of my over-zealous script that generates the Onyomi groups.
Currently it checks to see how many priority entries (those are the top 24000 frequent words), which use the kanji. Then it sees how many priority entries exist for each chinese reading for that character, and decides to put the character in the group with the most entries.
This is based on the current assumption that kanji chains will have only one reading per character and that learners can learn additional readings on the go. The onyomi groups had to be carefully setup to work with kanji chains, which is how the onyomi groups are configured now.
In the case of 沖 the script determined that there was, in fact, no "priority" entries using the chinese readings. Only the Japanese reading【おき】came as part of the most frequently used compounds.
So the character simply doesn't appear in the list. It is done so to try to save you time. Because if you go to "Add compound", you won't get any priority entries (green ball) for those characters if there were available in the list.
Ahh.. but I see now it is a problem because there is no quick route to the kanji study page other than from the review flashcards (the characters in the prompt are linked to the Kanji Study page). For this I've found Trinity needs a kind of lookup page where you can lookup words or characters directly.
Adding to my todo list.
Until I find a better idea to handle this you can check that the character doesn't show up in other group with other possible reading, if that's the case, it doesn't have any priority entries.

I got an odd case when I added one sentence. One of the words is 椅子(いす) and now I have the イ and ス group marked blue in the On Readings, but the kanji are not listed in any of the groups (don't have any of the other kanji either):
椅 have the reading イ, but not in RTK1.
子 have the reading ス, but is listed under シ.
I can understand that 椅 affects the イ group since the kanji in RTK3 will probably be listed as well in the future, but 子 should not affect another group if only the most common reading matters.
Some words I'm having difficulty adding to the JLPT vocab list I'm building:
伯父/叔父・さん おじ・さん uncle,middle aged man
伯母さん/叔母さん おばさん aunt
お風呂 おふろ bath
I can find all these words on the WWWJDIC server fine, I think it's a common problem with the お at the start.
I just want to thank you for this amazing program you have created. I really appreciate all you hard work gone into Trinity, and the whole site in general. It's tools like this, mixed with a lot of hard work, which is really going to help me with my Japanese.
No bugs for me so far for me =] but just a couple of ideas, and by looking at this topic alone, I'm sure you are getting a fair few! -
1) On the vocab lists from the vocab and sentence pages, could you make it so that when you click a Kanji, it would send you to that Kanji page?
2) On the vocab / sentence lists, could it be possible to show how many times you have got that vocab / sentence correct and indicate that you need to practise it more.
3) On the On readings page, could you make it show how many readings you have out of the total possible readings? like 3/10, etc, and possibly have a colour indicater of how far you have come with each reading (like blue for 100%, orange for 50% etc)
4) On the Kanji reading / vocab pages with different readings, as well with the Heisig word being shown, could you also put the Heisig number as well? I am only at 325 Kanji and I would like to know with some Kanji, how far I am to reaching it.
5) Could you be able to make it possible to sort vocab lists in alphatbetical and date order?
Also I am wondering how is Trinity going to meld with the rest of the site? I would love to be albe to see my Kanji writing mnemonic, my Kanji reading mnemonic and my vocab / reading lists for that Kanji all together. (are we getting that with Trinity as well? Sharing mnemonics to remember the different readings?)
Thank you again ![]()
I'd find some form of text formating useful, when inputting sentences I find being able to highlight in a different colour the important part useful.
Excellent job on Trinity! This is going to be a fabulous tool. I'm excited about it.
I especially like to Writing Quiz feature. It's an excellent check to make sure I really know the kanji -- more than simply recognizing it. Are there plans to keep track of the review status eventually? This would be extremely helpful. If I got it wrong, I want to review it later. Otherwise, I don't see the point of answering Yes/No/Easy. I would like to see a separate Writing tab like the Sentences and Vocabulary tabs. Alternatively, the word in the Vocabulary tab could be reset to Failed.
One additional point: The vocabulary section doesn't allow me to create a kana word if there exists a kanji equivalent. For example, I entered について and had to select from a list of kanji options. I just wanted to keep the kana word and its definition.
These points may have been mentioned previously in this long discussion thread.
Anyway, がんばってください! I'm looking forward to the Beta release.

Hi RickN, thank you!
Writing review status : no plans right now, although I liked the idea to have a global meaning/writing review status. The thing I want to try first, that avoids review overload is to adapt simply to what was learned recently. So in the future the writing quiz as well as other quizzes may give you the option to test the vocabulary that you reviewed recently. This would avoid extra flashcards and still allow to review different words and cycle through all the cards.
You would review from writing to meaning as usual, then from meaning to writing as an option. I don;t think the writing is so easy that having reviewed from the writing to the meaning recently will give much hints when you have to produce the written word from memory.
ファブリス, Any chance you can link trinity to COMPDIC, EDICT just doesn't have some of the words I want to add that are in COMPDIC.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I downloaded the files. It won't be as straightforward to add them as I hoped : whenever I talk of EDICT I am actually using JMDICT. JMDICT has a unique index number with each entry that's very useful for working with. But COMPDIC, and I assume ENAMDICT etc are the older EDICT format.
So anyway, I can and will add them but perhaps not until beta I'm afraid. I need to figure out a proper way to add those. The trick is that I need to be able to update the database with newer versions of JMDICT. I hope I don't need to update soon, but I thought ahead of a way to match new entries and old entries should the "ids" move around. However COMPDIC will add one level of complexity in that I need to generate new ids.
Ok I added a "Beta version checklist" into the first post and an entry for COMPDIC.
Thanks for adding COMPDIC to the To-Do list ファブリス ![]()
Having ENAMDICT would be interesting but I'm not sure how useful it would be, maybe some obscure place names.
One thing I've noticed is that when I finish reviewing my expired vocabulary cards, the bar-graph page loads, but it always loads back to the sentence tab, which kind of throws me off every time. Whoa! I've got nothing! Then I remember to change tabs to the vocab section. Ahh, there my green stacks are.
It would be a nice little fix if at the end of the review the system automatically took me back to the tab that I was reviewing.

Now Vocab Review end of review or "Exit" should both take you back to the Vocab tab.

Each time you add new cards, they go to the top of the blue stack. When you click the blue stack you get to review the most recently added cards first.
Is this how it works on the sentences page in trinity as well? If so my vote would be to switch it to the oldest cards being reviewed first. Like someone else mentioned on this thread, I like to work on the sentence vocabulary for a few days before I quiz the sentences. But if the blue stack is reviewing the newest sentences, it doesn't give me a chance to study the vocab...
After a rather prolonged break in my sentence reviews in Anki I ended up with half of my deck due for review, so I decided to take the opportunity to bite the bullet and move the expired material into Trinity.
I've added nearly 700 sentences to test, and it seems to be working well. I'm going through them to add the vocabulary. Haven't had any real problems.
Some notes / suggestions.
- Since the kanji in the sentence review are made into individual links, Rikai-chan doesn't work with them (can't use it to look up compounds quickly). It would be great if there was a button to toggle between the linkyfied text and just plain text for that purpose.
- For vocab linked to sentences, I want to link them so that I can track progress in terms of kanji readings (on the Great Wall of China), but since they are reviewed as part of the sentences there's no real need to review them as separate vocab out of context. What if there was a toggle on the sentence vocab that determined if it will appear in vocab review stacks or not? Or, do you have some other vision for vocab reviews?
I have started playing with Trinity and it looks really great.
Here are a couple of suggestions that came to my mind (sorry if it was discussed previously -- there are so many contributions to this thread already?)
- I think some users may want to practice with Trinity before actually completing RevTK (my case at least). So it would be nice if a connection existed between the two so that the kanji that have not yet been studied are displayed distinctly in sentences. Even better, they could appear in kana in the quizz until they have been learned in RevTK. For that of course, the program should somehow know the proper pronunciation in each particular case. This could be entered at the time the sentenced is typed in. Actually, I feel that there might be an extra field specifically for the pronunciation, like in Anki rather than putting everything in the Note field (one can then choose to leave it empty).
- I am currently working on RevTK in its French version using the GreaseMonkey scripts (thanks Woelpad!), but I still wish those invaluable (for me ;-) ) features will some day be included in the core of the website. It would be great if this point could be considered in Trinity from an early stage so that international users can practice more comfortably in their own language. I remember there are some scary copyright issues involved here concerning RTK, but one might also thing of Edict which has French and German translations if I remember correctly.
Admittedly I have no idea of how complex those features would be to implement.
In any case the site is great. Very nice job!
Hi everyone,
Quick post on today's site update before I run :
* Sentence and Vocab list editors : moved "Add word" block
before the wordlist instead of after, so it stays always
in view. Seems more intuitive too.
* Implemented new table interface for Sentences, Sentence
Packs, Vocab lists, and a new "Vocab Flashcards" page.
* Minor feedback improvement in sentence and vocab editor :
Save button now goes back to gray after clicking Delete
or New, so you can tell each time you click Save that
the operation went succesfully.
* Optimized javascript loading time by "minifying" them.
The new tables is the biggest change. May not seem like much on the
user's end but those page use a new framework, ajax updates,
some cool javascripts that also allow per-row editing, adding new rows,
posting and validating forms via ajax... features which I will enable
gradually and implement where it makes sense.
This new table UI is more than cosmetic as it's easily implemented on
the server side, it will allow me to create all sorts of administration pages
with editable data, usable both by me and by "editors" for things like
preset keyword lists, translations in the dictionary, etc. All of which would
take me forever otherwise.
If you find any bugs in Trinity where it worked prior to today's update please let me know asap, thanks!
Not much "new" features yet, but I think it feels more solid now ![]()
Yesterday's update
In Manage Vocab > Vocablists table, click "Kanji" to test yourself on the kanji that appears in your vocablist. KNOWN BUG : It does not include kanji with irregular readings yet.
Today's update
In Manage Vocab > Vocablists table, click "Vocab" to test yourself on the vocab from that list. Great for reviewing lessons and such. Or if you store a Japanese excerpt in the vocablist notes, and attached vocabulary, likewise you can review vocab for that article.
In both cases by "test" I mean review without a flashcard status update. You can repeat as many times as you want.
Hey ファブリス, great work on the updates, I like that the vocab list section has been moved to where vocab flash cards was, much more efficient.
Just one thing: Any chance you could implement a list view of failed vocabulary words much like the failed kanji on the main site, the way I study is to add vocabulary from a list, then cards I fail I will add an example sentence for, it would be much easier to have a list of failed vocabulary cards rather than having to click review each time to get one card.
Bug fix
Fixed error in Sentence Editor when saving sentence with some special characters. Fixed related bug with special characters in Sentence Pack names.
(thanks vosmiura!)
Sentence Packs Not Deleting
I have changed the sentence pack name of sentences and also deleted sentences within a sentence pack but the name of the pack which appears both on the drop down auto complete list on the sentence editor, and in the manage sentence packs list is still there.
Loving Trinity still, excellent work
Japanese is improving so much while using it.
Also are there going to be two way flashcards? I would love to be tested on writing the sentence in Japanese by looking at the English sentence without having to input two sets of cards.
Thanks again ![]()
I just want to say that Trinity is incredible. I can't wait to see the final version.
Not sure if this is a bug, but I added sentences last night and this morning I noticed there were more sentences than I had added. turns out one sentence somehow got added twice.
As I am reviewing in Trinity I thought I'd mention another use for the clickable kanji in Vocab Review:
Technically Vocab added through the Kanji Study page should also have a "Source" link on the right side, that would take you to the Kanji Study page instead of Sentence or Vocab list (Trinity knows where from you added the vocabulary item).
This link is not there yet, so when you want to add a new example word for a kanji appearing in your vocab review which you didn't remember well, or remove a word you no longer want to review, which was also added through the Kanji Study page; clicking the kanji in the prompt lets you do that.
Hey Fabrice, when do you think we should be expecting the beta version? Might it be weeks or should we not anticipate it for a few more months?
