Trinity alpha is closed (Existing users can continue to use the version that is online).
Please don't repost the link to the register page anywhere else as I would like to keep number of users down during Alpha. The app is really not ready to go officially "public". If I get more than a few hundred registrations I will have to temporarily close it. In any case you can email me if you have trouble logging in Trinity.
Known Issues
* In general, Trinity has not been tested extensively in anything else than Firefox. Please try to use Firefox for this alpha version of Trinity. IE compatibility can be a huge time sink, plus the layout and design is not finished, loads of things like the gray buttons are just place holders. IE6/Safari/Opera compatiblity will be addressed for the beta.
* The whole feedback mechanism when you save your changes on the sentence/vocab editor is not very intuitive, I know. That's because I expect the layout of those pages may still change a lot for the beta.
* You can't rename or delete sentence packs. I've got some great Javascripts just waiting to be implemented which will allow for per-row editing tables, selecting and deleting multiple rows etc. which will make implementing those functionality a lot easier.
* Long sentences are cut short on the review page.. will have to adapt the layout.
Known limitations
* The "~" reading on the Study page means "irregular" reading (try the "Help" button). For example, on the Kanji Study page for "今", the word "今日" will appear under the irregular readings section. The limitation is that the script I used to "split" kanji compounds into parts and assign readings to each part (furigana), is not perfect, so occasionally you will find some words there which are not technically irregular readings.
* The word lookup on the Kanji Study page only shows priority entries from EDICT. It used to show all results but I found it was too slow for some very common kanji like 生 you could get well over 500 results and this would be too slow for constant ajax requests on the server. Limiting to priority entries was a quick fix. Eventually I would like to add a paging option so you can pull the rest of the "non-priority" entries. I'll be happy to keep this as low priority though.
Beta version checklist
This is for remembering and also a commitment towards some of the suggestions and requests here. I'm not going to list every single little quirks or little changes, this list is only big changes or parts completely missing :
* COMPDIC ("glossary of terminology in the computing and telecommunications industries") add to dictionary (~14000 entries) {meolox}
* Japanese Keyword Review of RtK1 kanji
* ...
Wow, this came a lot sooner than I expected.
Finally it's (almost) here, first impressions are great!!!
Thanks let me know asap if anything looks really broken. I'll be offline in ~40 mins.
I did try to update sooner this time but it took a while to do the update carefully and also upload my own data from local use since November or so... so in the end I finished 3 hours later ![]()
Reviewing sentences seems odd.
Only added one sentence, but when clicking on the blue stack to review sentences, it displays "ai love love" - totally nothing to do with my sentence...
Some not-so-obvious features :
- During reviews the blue characters are links, click any character to go to the kanji study page (the Trinity page), now you can see other compounds you've learned before which share this character.
- Like wise during reviews, you will see that the review summary is not yet available. On the other hand you will see a "Source(s)" link which lets you edit directly the sentence or vocablist related to the item you are reviewing.
- Adding vocab: after pressing enter, use cursor keys up/down and enter key to speed up. Though I am aware it's not ideal due to the list appearing at the bottom of the window, and the necessity to scroll the content in your browser.. I will need to rethink the layout appropriately.
It would be really useful to have some way to import a formatted vocabulary list instead of entering them all by hand - especially since being an alpha the safety of the data isn't guaranteed.
-edit-
I also just get "ai love love" when I try to review the (one) sentence I added.

Same
I really like the writing quiz, but just wondering how it chooses words. Does it just completely randomly choose words and the kanji to test you on, or does it remember kanji/words you passed/failed?
If possible, it would also be nice to have the option of a J-J dictionary for the definitions. Not a priority, but definitely would be nice down the road.
I really like this though. Huge congrats and job well done!

Added another sentence, went to review and was quizzed on
高等部に進学して、まだ姉を持っていなかった祐巳は、憧れの『紅薔薇のつぼみ
Not mine...anyone claim ownership?
sutebun: there are no free J-J dictionaries so that's impossible I think.
bug:
When reviewing vocabulary, the button to turn the card over says "see kanji" instead of see definition or similar.

Sentences : fixed, silly bug returned incorrect sentence string for the flashcard display.
synewave : "ai love love" is a dummy sentence (hence the english) where I put compounds with kanj "ai" to test in the Onyomi area. Anyway as said above, fixed now ![]()
Agh, it's down, just as I was about to start entering more vocab ![]()
Ok other than the bug synewave found, I think Trinity is working fine. But I think it's better that I take it down until tomorrow evening, as I won't be able to attend to the site for the next 16 hours or so.
In the event that there would be a bug somewhere that would potentially compromise your data, I want to be able to fix the bug asap while I am online. I tried to update the site sooner today, about 9pm but it still took a lot longer than I hoped.
My apologies to the ~20 users who registered just tonight. Trinity will be back up tomorrow evening asap.

Mine. I entered a few sentences from http://ziggr.com/mariasama/ as test fodder.
Just like to point out that your sentence showed up to synewave due to an old bug that I fixed asap. I took Trinity down just in case another similar one would be lying around, though I doubt so (some old code from the first version in which there was a single user).
Anyway this to point out that your Trinity sentences and vocab are by default PRIVATE as it is in the RevTK Study area.
Importing data : I'll see if I can do this, though during the alpha I'd prefer people spend time with the UI and not input too much data via import. Your data is pretty safe though, I do regular backups, and it will be maintained throughout the "official" release. I covered this shortly in the Trinity Notes, which are now temporarily offline..
No worries. Bugs happen. Alpha testers get to see more of them than the smart people who sit back and wait until it's done. ^_^
The import thing is just a suggestion. Sure, it took me 20 minutes to input 5 sentences, and bulk import could have done 10 pages in 10 seconds, but that's cool. For alpha, I really don't mind going through the manual interface for a while, especially if it'll help shake out more UI changes that you'll want to know about for the rewrite.
Trinity *alpha* is back online!
By the way, does anyone know a really easy Bug Tracker ? It would be great to use one to gather ideas and bugs.
Edit: Updated first post.

I guess it depends what you mean by easy! I've used Test Track Pro for many years with no problems.

There's the Mantis Bug Tracker. Requires php and MySQL and is released under GPL.
I mean user-friendly. We use JIRA at work. It's excellent but far too complex for what I need.
Also I meant a simple online service, not something to install on the server.
Fixed
* Pressing Enter in Vocab & Sentence Editor doesn't reload page

Can use google code's bug tracker without actually putting code on the site.
Great to see Trinity back up...
One thing I've noticed is that long sentences seem to get truncated when you go to the sentence review page, i.e. 2 lines max.
Is there an intended word limit per sentence?
EDIT; sentences are fine in the manage sentences area, it's just my review page that is effected.

Sentences can be up to ~250 characters.
The review page, yes.. I have to think of a good layout that adapt to cards with long sentences, because I want to keep the characters large and easy to read.
A note on the readings :
In theory there is no need to copy the readings for the sentence into the notes area. If you add the words in the sentence, each word has the reading below.
So if you want to add sentences a little faster, use a descriptive sentence pack name, add the words you don't know well and that's it. For grammatical constructions you'll probably want to use the notes. You may have noticed already the sentence editor always sets the last sentence pack you used as default.
The difference with a complete phonetic reading is that words from the dictionary are in plain form, non conjugated. But you can infer the proper reading by removing the kana ending and using the kana from the sentence. I think that works always, though I'd be interested to know if you come accress situations where this doesn't work.
I think for new material, researching the verbs and non-inflected adjectives and such is good practice, although I should probably improve the dic so that you can do wildcards.
For existing material, I reckon it may feel tedious to enter the words for each sentence.
Enter only the words that you don't know well enough yet. That was the main idea I started with, because for simplicity's sake every word you add become a flashcard without any other action required.
This has the downside that if you add simple everyday words from the sentences, they will come into your reviews. When you review, just click "Source(s)" link to go to the sentence, and remove the words that you don't want to review. If you read the sentence later and you can't read it anymore, chances are you need to review that word again ![]()
A vocabulary item flashcard will be deleted when there is no more sentence, vocablist OR kanji study page pointing to it.
If you add a word from the kanji study page, you'll know because the "x" to delete it only appears there. I need to add the "Source" link there too so you can go from review to the study page and unlink words. The reason you can add words from there is when you want to go study from the onyomi groups, or when you want to "fill in the blanks" once you have 80% or more of the onyomi readings covered. Or you could ignore it, and stick to words you actually use or come accross while reading, up to you!
In the future, I think I will merge vocablists and sentences into the first TAB. There's just too much overlap. Then TAB 2 should be purely about words with more tests and quizzes to practice the writings/readings.
Then TAB 1 will also be about "articles", which is something you can simulate now by pasting a text excerpt into the notes area, except you don't review it, but all the related words can be attached. Which will then tie in directly with a revamped "reading" page...
I think I need to re-read Fabrice's last post...
Another thing that's confusing me is adding vocab via the Sentence Editor view. Sometimes a BLUE icon appears next to the word and other times a GREEN icon. I don't get it...
EDIT: When I'm adding sentences and vocab from those sentences via the Sentence Editor view, click save, the sentences are saved fine, but the vocab isn't. May well be a browser problem (only have IE at work) but it seemed okay yesterday. Will try Firefox when I get home.

I tried adding the word: おかあさん (お母さん)but it wasn't found in the dictionary. However, 弟さん was in the dictionary. Can vocab be entered in 'kana' mode?
