Hey y'all,

Although this forum is surprisingly hardened against the need for TL;DR's, here it is: This is a journal for my progress of completing RTK LITE at a pace of 63 kanji a day. Come watch my progress.

Too long have I been illiterate in Japanese. The height of my non-applicable kanji knowledge was the summer of 2013-- where I had gotten all the way to kanji number 1000 in normal keyword-to-kanji RTK. A short study abroad in Japan proved this knowledge to be less useful than I thought.
In an effort to increase my vocabulary, practical kanji knowledge, and to pass the JLPT N2 this December I will learn the 1115 of kanji and primitives in RTK LITE in 17 days.

    The following is the method:
1115 Kanji + Radicals are required to complete RTK LITE.
I will spend 15 days studying and 2 days resting at my discretion.
Every day I will "learn" 63 kanji.

Two months ago I played around with this idea, and reviewed 180 kanji and have been actively reviewing them in Anki. This leaves me 935 to study in 15 days. A completed day consists of reviewing/re-learning 63 kanji and an associated vocabulary word for the kanji I don't know. Because my university schedule is top-heavy throughout the week, any kanji I learn during my two days off will roll over into fulfilling the next day's requirements. This about learning the kanji after all.

I vaguely know a lot of kanji from my past RTK expeditions. Because of this not every kanji will be added into my Anki deck. I will simply gloss over many as review, but with every kanji that I can't instantly connect a Japanese word to or can't pick apart into primitives will go into my Anki deck. I will also add a sentence containing an example word composed of that kanji to another deck. I'll probably get most of the example words from KanjiDamage.com

My card will be formatted as such:
Front:
-- Multiple words written in hiragana that contain the specified kanji
-- The RTK and possibly Kanji Damage keyword

Back:
-- Kanji
-- Radicals
-- Stories
-- Example words written with kanji

The review will be successful if I can write the kanji correctly with the reference to the vocabulary on the front of the card. I know learning to correctly write them is not required in the JLPT, but we all just use the JLPT as a prop to actually become fluent, right?

I will begin day 1 on October 6th, 2014 and finish day 17 on October 23rd, 2014.

Love to get feedback on this plan. Thanks y'all! <3

Good luck. If you don't give up towards the end, it should be perfectly doable. Half of RtK in 17 days should be significantly easier than all of RtK in 34 days.

And don't forget to keep reviewing, and keep adding Kanji as you need them, even after the 17 days.

Notes:
Out of the 64 Kanji I reviewed, I added 23 to Anki. It took more than two hours just to do twenty cards. The time suck is really around finding a useful vocabulary word to learn with the kanji, since I normally know the most common word associated with the kanji. I hope I can make a system to pick up the pace, because I'm sure in the later days a majority of the reviewed kanji will also be kanji I have to add to Anki.

@Stansfield123 Thanks for the encouragement and advice!

燥 any useful word other than 乾燥?

It can apparently be used to spell はしゃぐ but I've never seen it in kanji.

暮 any useful word other than 暮らす?

暮れる, 日が暮れる being the most common use. 野暮.

導 誘導=ゆうどう=lead, guide

And induce (lots of induction-* compounds).

Notes:
I've stopped searching for vocab for kanji that I really can't find a seemingly useful word that I don't already know. Compared to my normal "immersion" learning style, it's been slightly tougher to have to memorize "newspaper words" and other vocabulary our of context. Adding 37 cards this day took longer than yesterday. I think most of today's time can be attributed to lack of sleep. My goal for tomorrow is to maintain more intense focus on getting the kanji and vocab into Anki.

@Vempele, Thanks for the suggestions! I've added those words to my vocabulary deck.

Cool idea datrukup!

Keeping a journal is a good way to keep yourself on track and doing it publicly raises the stakes.  It's also a good resource for beginners to see in detail what they are getting into.  Maybe mods should make a journal category in the index...?  Keep up the good work!  I can't wait to see how your experiment progresses.

辺 - discounting あたり, へん, -べ (窓辺, 上辺...), maybe you don't know 周辺?
冗 - I've seen 饒舌, which can also be spelled 冗舌.
運 - discounting 運動, 運 and 運ぶ: 海運 (maritime), maybe? Seems to be mostly used in compounds. Don't think I've ever seen it myself.
詰 - discounting 詰まる/詰める: 詰る なじる
談 - 談話
城 - じょう, with the same meaning as しろ. Mostly in compounds, e.g. 王城.

Day 3
Day Off

Days Off Remaining: 1

Notes:
A busy schedule and deadlines kept me from studying today. When I re-start tomorrow, I'm going to first print out the kanji and meanings out on one page. I'll review these during the day to get maximum exposure, and I'll save the Anki work for a continuous chunk time. I feel that separating the conceptualizing from the drudge work will help remedy the mental sluggishness that learning just 64 kanji has imposed on me.

@yogert909 Thanks for the support! Nice blog by the way. Keep it up!

@Vempele Thanks for helping me out! I'm adding these vocab to my deck.

がんばって!

This should be perfectly possible...although it seems like you've got school kicking your ass too, so you know, don't kill yourself over this. I hope this goes well! If it does, I might use this method to re-do RTK. I've gone through it one and a half times now,  but I just can't keep up with reviewing 2k kanji. The ones I actually use in my immersion I remember, but all those others just don't seem worth it...at least not at my level.

You're making the anki cards yourself, right? That is a lot of extra work, in addition to reviews.

Thanks for sharing this project! Best of luck!

Notes:
This project is NOT over. Today was another busy day consisting of job interviews and tests, but I was able to get 49 new kanji reviewed, but it's not the minimum so I'm calling today a day off. Tomorrow will prove much more fruitful.

@jessem Thanks for the encouragement! I am making my own cards. That is the most time consuming part. I hope you can get your RTK all mastered some day smile

I found a deck a while ago that helped me at the time, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore.  However, I did find a deck that probably has what you are looking for, since you're interested in putting in example vocab.  Top 2 Koohii stories are also included.  Of course, you can remove whatever fields you don't need and pick only 1 or 2 of the words that seem to be the most popular in the example vocab field.

Your definition for 攻める is wrong, it's "to attack; to assault; to assail".

Interesting to see 攻める mentioned.  Sorry to get off topic, but I came across the phrase "攻めのコンサバ" in a magazine recently.  It was in connection with an article about a soccer player.  I interpreted the phrase to mean "offensive save" ie., a move made in a soccer game.  Is that correct?

コンサバ is conservative ("especially about fashion" according to 広辞苑), short for コンサーバティブ, I have no idea where you got "save" (which would be セーブ) from.

攻めのコンサバ appears to be a (currently fashionable?) style - lots of hits for 攻めのコンサバジャケット in particular (an article about 10 reasons why your jacket isn't "in", even though it's 攻めのコンサバ).

Notes:
Another relatively short session. Lots of mid-terms this week, but I'll still chug through these. The Anki review portion of my study sessions has become more irregular due to time constraints. For now I think this is okay as I mostly have time away from a computer to review my notebook that I write all my kanji down in.

@Vempele thanks again! Adding these vocab to my Anki deck

Today's Kanji Reviewed:      63
Today's Anki Cards Added:   29

忙 - 忙しない
誌 - 週刊誌
硬 - 強硬, though I'm not entirely sure I've ever seen it.
双 - 双眼鏡

If you want an on-yomi word there's 多忙 which is used in letters (as ご多忙中 or ご多忙のところ)

@Vempele 忙しない is new to me, as are the others. Thanks!
@yudantaiteki Thanks! I knew the vocab word from a core deck but I had no idea of the actual usage. I'm learning so much actually having people explain words rather than an English-->Japanese keyword.

I'm postponing the rest of this journey until I have some more free time and have matured these anki cards a little more. Never start a resolution at the beginning of midterms.

Thanks y'all!

Wait, so just like that it's over?

Just when I was getting inspired.

You gotta do what's right for you, but if your intention is to stick with it, I might recommend keeping a new card every day or something.  I find Anki review time a lot more tolerable when there's always a trickle of fresh content to see.  Might just be me though!

This works for me too; My courses are only seven weeks long, so I'm always busy keeping up with them, but I've found that I can still easily add ten or twenty cards a day (vocab; slightly easier to add than what you're doing, OP). I'd say try and add five cards per day and keep up on your reviews, or else you'll be swamped when you come back to it.

Whatever you do, though, good luck in your classes and I hope to see this continued when you have more time.
