I'm an AJATT 'follower', so I'm for the "japanese to meaning" method, where meaning can be the English translation or, when have you gained a little experience (maybe after a few hundred cards) just the Japanese definition of the words.

If you haven't already done so, you may be interested in reading the other articles on that blog, especially the "10'000 sentences" ones listed in the sidebar. But you probably already know the method, since it's been suggested a few times on this thread.
