Hi,
I have spent some time to reach about the half of Genki 1 and it become quite boring for continuing...I really did not liked the childish exercises and dialogs...

Az I like grammar and learning kanji I have bought 2 books:
A Guide to Remembering Japanese Characters
and
Japanese the Manga Way (for the grammar)

As waiting them to arrive I wonder if somebody tried something similar and if it works?

PS
My goal is to reach some level to intermediate and to can express and understand some basic stuff on daily matter.

If you truly dislike the Genki series, disregard this post.

When I went through the genki series, I skipped all the nonsense dialog and exercises. Instead, I studied all the vocabulary I wanted and all of the grammar that was being taught. Also at the back of the book there's practice reading sections, ranging from short paragraphs to full essays. If you use anki, you can put the vocabulary and example sentences which are extremely helpful in retaining what you've learned.

This and Mangaland are both good books but you need to realize how limiting basic vocabulary and grammar are.  It's much better to power through Genki and get that basic stuff into your head than it is to waste time trying to search for the perfect book.

If you really hate the whole idea of using a structured textbook you could always start directly into media and build your vocab and grammar up directly from that.  It's extremely painful at the start and probably not substantially more interesting than Genki.
