I often get mixed up when writing this character and sometimes put the nose and tongue primitives on the wrong sides. I've been trying to think of a good story to help remember this but can't think of anything snappy. Any ideas?

In terms of primitive positioning rules, it looks like the tongue primitive can go anywhere. Nose never appears on the left so I could use that as a rule but it's quite rare for nose to appear by itself so the rule will likely be forgotten.

I had trouble with this for a while too. But finally managed remember it with the following imagary:

At recess a boy and a girl make out, he's trying to win her heart. He is so eager he sticks his tongue right down her throat, but then realises he's overdoing it so switches to rubbing noses instead.

This makes it easy for me to remember that tongue takes priority over nose.

Or you could appeal more to imagination.  "He tries to use his tongue to touch his nose" and then when you visualize the story, see his long KISS-like tongue coming out and missing the nose to the left--always to the left.  You could (as you visualize the story) try to see if you can touch the left side of your nose with your tongue, as long as there's nobody watching.  A physical component to reinforce the visualization of the story.

People learn different ways.  It's always best to try to get multiple channels going, and find the one that works best for you.

Thanks for the suggestions.

That works for me, thanks.

Not a mnemonic, but I've remembered this one by remembering the overall outline of the character, starting off with a pleasant rounded corner on the top-left.

I think of some primitives as "weak" and others "strong", the strong ones get the placement on the left or top usually, the part that indicates the meaning of the character.

I had trouble with "tongue" for a while, I think it's a "weak" primitive. But even a weak primitive will get the strong placement, if it is paired with a primitive that nevers appears in the strong position : 乱.

So with this system, "tongue" comes left in 憩, because "oneself" 自is like "hook", it nevers shows up on the left side (it can be on the left as in 鼾 but only as part of another primitive, not on its own).
