I'd like to find a list of DVD/BD movies spoken Japanese, with both Japanese and English subtitles.  I basically would like to watch with them on off, checking for comprehension.  I'm in the US.  I found _exactly_ one DVD so far.  Very old Mishima DVD (not Criterion).

I'm not having much luck searching for such a list.

I haven't explored downloads much.  I did find _Tampopo_ with both subs.  Can I make Anki cards from MKV files?  I never seem to have time to dig into how to put this all together.  Has someone already done this I wonder, and put together some easy to follow materials/guides?  I basically want to watch reasonably interesting or entertaining programming with native speaker japanese actors (I want to see them speak to-no japanese dub K drama).  I watched some soap operas while in japan, and could toggle CC on and off.  Seemed like the material is as banal as US drama, but that's probably good when learning.  Obvious plots are fine.  "Pedestrian" Japanese is great.  "You're dad is sick?"  "Let's hurry to the hospital."  "Marry me."  I get it.

My level: Just finished Genki II at a US university.  English is L1.

よろしくお願いします。

In Japan, all studio Ghibli movies have E and J subs.

I appreciate that.  While I'm a fan, (just saw Pom Poko) I'd prefer material that is live-action.  I want to see facial expressions, gestures, and observe articulation.

I'd say your best bet is going with any of the dramas listed on D-addict's Japanese subtitle index that have complete (or partial) E and J subs.

Thanks

I googled this: http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/subtitles.php

So it's organized by language.  It seems titles are translated into English?  and Japanese title is in Romaji.  So how do I come up with a list of shows with both E and J?  Are subtitles embedded?  Separate files?  I guess I should look for a good FAQ.

I downloaded something just to get started. [AozoraSubs+H!F] Minna! ESPer Dayo! - 03 (1280x720).mp4

Looks funny.  But only E subs, and they can't be turned off.

You can find links to (removable) English and Japanese subs for Minna... here:

http://jdramacity.blogspot.com/2013/05/ … -dayo.html

Those from AozoraSubs+H!F not only are hard-subbed, but the translation is absolutely terrible, accuracy-wise.

I got it all working, thanks!  It took a couple hours though, so you have to be pretty determined just to get the tech stuff to work.  This series looks hilarious.

I referred to http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index … 447AAlK4hg to get the jp subs to not show as boxes and show the real jp.  I wish that part was more automatic.  Other mkv files I've downloaded seem to. Must be more meta data that tell VLC how to do display.

If someone wants to add some links to general FAQs or getting started or best practices etc here, please.  Stuff like where to put the sub files to VLC auto opens (noticed that preference).

Next I'll check out subs2srs which looks totally helpful for my goals.  I'm already using Anki.
