ok, so that title makes no sense...

how are the un-starred stories sorted at the moment?

I'd like to suggest that they are sorted according to the inverse of how many stories a user has shared out of all their stored stories

so, if i share a story for all of my active kanji then it's unlikely that all my stories are fantastic, so sort mine to the bottom

but if I only share a small number of my stories, I probably think they are really worth sharing, so they should be sorted to the top

of course, the staring system is most helpful for finding a good story, but after that this might help a little

I don't think there's much relation between number of shared stories and quality.  I've seen both cases, where people have shared stories for many kanji and they are excellent e.g. Dingomick, Fabrice, and many others... and also I've seen some (who shall remain nameless) share stories for most kanji that I thought they just didn't get the hang of the method at all.

Anyway, I think the best is to encourage people to share anything they consider decent and the voting will sort out the best of the best.

Stories are sorted on stars, and for the same number of stars (or no stars) on last edited time, so newer come first.

A better alternative to the first post is to average the rating of the user's other shared stories, and then sort the unsorted stories by that average. That way a user who consistently shares good stories will have their new stories closer to the top.

Hey, I'm with Fabrice.  The higher the stars the  more the  people that think the story is good. So the higher the stars, the  closer to the top.  If no stars, the  older the date, the more the opportunity there was for people to star but didn't.  Eventually the oldie no stars get dropped out.  Perfect for me.

i noticed when 2 stories got an even amount of  stars the story that got a notice gets at top, i think this is bad.

remember, this is only for un-starred stories.  of course, starred stories should be sorted to the top (even above the "new and updated stories", IMHO)

yeah, that's true for some people, but those that have lots of good stories will probably have at least one star if their story is good for any particular kanji, and so will already be sorted to the top.   it's exactly your second example I'm trying to deal with

that's great!  how about a combination of the two?  sort by your method first, then for those from users who have no starred stories (average 0), do it this way.

yeah, sorry, kinda obvious!  I guess you're keen on keeping it that way?  still, it could be a user option, or some kind of shading or marking used to indicate the "score" (though probably neater just as an option)

anyway, thanks for everyone's feedback!  I just had the idea when looking through long lists of stories and having to skip over lots of uninteresting ones that seems to be from users who post every one of their stories...  I guess I should just be grateful that everyone is sharing stories, as that's what makes this site so great, but at 3:30am when you just want to finish adding today's quota of new kanji it's hard to maintain perspective!

I think other people have been getting at this too, but the inherent problem with putting a story with any stars above all new stories is that new stories will always be at the bottom, no one will see them, and no one will star them - unless they are really desperate and scroll all the way to the bottom.  I've really enjoyed some of the "new" stories because some of the have to do with current events and are therefore very memorable for the early stages of learning.  Also, many people write very similar stories, so if someone has a fresh, totally different idea, I think it's great if it's at the top for a little while.

keeping new stories above old un-starred stories is fine.  I'd rather them just under the starred ones but above is ok.  it's the un-starred old stories that I'm concerned with
