Has there been experiments on SRS vs. flash cards?

I'm talking about the efficiency of them. It makes sense that SRS is faster than flash cards because it forces you to spend as little amount of time as possible on them. Are there experiments that directly show that SRS is faster in learning vocabulary? If not then how would you test such a thing?

Do you mean spaced repetition vs. just repeated review of flashcards without paying attention to how well a word has been learned? Or do you mean SRS software? For the former, there are oodles of studies on the Leitner method that show evidence of much better recall. Correct recall is directly related to efficiency if defined as number of words memorized in a given time span.

Hmm...I mean repetition automatically spaced by a computer being more efficient in learning masses of words than regular flash cards (that I guess you space out by yourself?).

I'm thinking of such experiments as "guy does SRS/non-SRS for x weeks then sees how many new words he knows"

And let's make "knowing" as "being able to recall and understand the meaning of the word when seen standing alone" or something.

I want to read up on some studies if they're out there.
