This topic is pretty crazy to me, since Japanese Dramas are one of the main reasons I started learning Japanese. Seriously, I like them that much.
And the acting is exceptional. I have no idea what you folks are talking about. Do you guys only watch dramas filled with idols or something?

What I'm saying is that the stuff I read mentions issues that exist today in the anime industry and how that contributes to the crappy low quality. I just have this opinion and after I read all that i gained more understanidng as to exactly why or possible reasons. I found it to be a fascinating read. I don't want to do the cliche old anime vs new anime argument. That been done a billion times on any anime forum
Read manga then, they have tons of more variety and none of the "issues" or whatever that stuff is you're talking about.
don't worry i hate manga lol so I don't read it. I love japanes talk/variety shows so i watch that. ariyoshi is so damn brilliant. though i have been reading (or trying to read) onani master kurozawa (which is technically doujinshi? )I just know that the only official publication is some bunko-version of it.
I recommend talk/variety shows because I find them so funny. the only thing with those is you gotta find the ones that are compatible with you. also some shows, depending on the theme, will either be super awesome or super boring (for example I hate the 100 en section of haneru no tobira so i don' twatch it, I find episodes of london hearts about love triangles and ranking of onnna geinin boring so i don't watch it.
I recommend honma dekka, ame talk, shabekuri 007 ( especially the ones from 2008-2010... it's like any show, the earlier seasons are better), london hearts
like i said in my past post... i LOVE 怪談話 just search 怪談話 動画 or on youku and find out yourself.
speaking of kaidan banashi is ぞっとする話 and すべらない話 決めてほしい話... they're all shows that star matsumoto hitoshi. As of late I'm obsessed with ブラマヨとゆかいな仲間たち アツアツっ! I'm finally getting around to watching eps i didn't finish watching.
to watch search the name of the show + douga in google. there's a slim chance that youtube has it just b.c. it'll get removed eventually since it is copyrighted. BTW youtube is a great way to break into talk variety shows since people put up intersting clips of the shows/episodes ( I mean watch it before it gets removed lol...) . In fact you can use youtube by searching for topics that interest you about japan to find out about tv shows etc etc etc
Oh and I WANTED to share this link with people. So the youtube video still didn't get removed so you can watch it. and if you don't want to deal with the video getting deleted, download it with keepvid.com
This is a prime example of japanese comedy that's popular/well-known and actually funny (like for me hannya is not funny at all but for some reason they were mad popular in 2009 or something) at least of the konbi neta kind. there's also manzai and conto and god knows what else. there's also a scandal regarding one of the people in this konbi group if you want to read about it.... (google 藤森慎吾 中絶) but obviously you'll only care/find it interesting if you know about this konbi group. fujimori might disappear from tv bc of this scandal ![]()

so I was watching this owarai konbi's neta thing and [googled for the transcript and i found them. so you can learn from it with parts you can't catch by ear. I find this funny. I LOVE buyuu-den and i've been wanting to watch as many of the buyuuden as possible but 2 years ago or whenevre it was I watched it,,,, it all got removed but it got re-upped on youtube. also the kae-uta videos that were uploaded by this user are awesome. I love the kae-uta shows too... they're so funny sometimes.

You "hate" manga? As in you don't enjoy the picture/dialogue format or reading in general or is there something else? "Manga" is a rather wide medium. It could be compared to the statement "I hate fictional novels". It seems like a rather sweeping statement, is all. Oh well, to each there own.
"onani master kurozawa", I'm not sure if it's self-published or not, but it would still be a manga, even if it were a doujinshi product. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doujinshi is the term used for "self-published; independent" art, including anime, manga, novels, music, etc. Basically what people try to sell at those massive annual comic markets, and stuff.
For example: the group "Supercell", became famous for their Hatsune Miku based music they created and sold at these comic convention thingos, so popular in fact that Sony picked them up. So they were making "doujinshi-music" before they were being produced and marketed by someone else.
OMK, btw, if anything to go off the English translation, is a rather good read. If you find yourself enjoying it, there are a few others with a similar feel.
I'm reading it bc of welcome to the NHk of course. I guess hate is a strong word by I hate it i mean it in the sense that I prefer reading books and watching anime/ talk variety shows/ american drama etc over reading manga. It's just my personal preference. I can see how the phrase I hate manga irks you. Don't worry I'm not contradicting myself by saying I like anime in this context. There's lots of anime out there so of course there are ones I like in there.

Many anime are not true to the original manga. That's because some anime are not even supervised by their creators. TV companies are just looking to cash in. Some anime might even cut out characters/storylines or switch/combine roles of different characters.
But it's ok, if you don't like manga. It's your personal preference. You can't exact 100% of the world to agree on anything.
In a way, it reminds me of someone in my family. He doesn't eat vegetables. As in, he hates ALL vegetables and never eats any. I'm surprised he's still alive, since I'm sure he must have many nutrition deficiencies. He won't even try vegetables that he's seen for the first time. It's a pretty broad statement to hate all vegetables considering that they cover a wide spectrum of tastes.
I think with manga people need to associate with authors. Find one that you like and follow all their manga. Many of them are pretty consistent in terms of their quality.

That's cool man. No need to try and please other people; your tastes are all the more better for you because of whatever reasons you have.
I guess I was a little curious as to whether there was some other personal motives behind the statement, being a broad statement and such.
Where do you fall on the "light novel" genre? A lot of anime, manga and dorama are based on them. For someone who can read Japanese, there sure is a whole lot of light novel reading available, and probably free online (if you don't mind reading off a computer screen/printing out pages to read).

Well 90% of manga aren't even made into anime, so you're missing out on.....a whole lot of good stuff.
Manga isn't any different from a fictional novel. It has every genre you can think of. I'm sure you can find a manga about the 1920's US depression if you looked hard enough.
This was exactly my opinion after the first drama I ever saw.
It was called "My Boss My Hero", and was so crazy that I though "Hmm, this must be once of the weirder and worse dramas Japan has to offer." I really couldn't believe my eyes when I checked a JDrama Fansite and that particular Drama was among the 50 best of all times!!
You get used to it after a time though. I became a big fan of Nagase Tomoya. You should seriously check out Tiger & Dragon!!

I already know that. I just don't like manga. it's my personal preference. i'm not missing out. I don't know what it is about with following the picture and the dialogue. I just prefer books over manga.
