Don't mean to bump an old thread but I just found this great link for streaming real-time Japanese TV. Could be helpful to some:

Has anyone been able to get this running in linux (under wine)?

The client for KeyHole TV has been updated, and I don't know about anybody else but this has really made it better for me, the stream doesn't lag behind the audio now.

Anybody else seeing any improvements?

Great program, I leave it running all the time, too bad NHK isn't on it.

EDIT Nevermind, 3.06 didn't work but I tried to re-install it today and it works.

Also again heartily recommend Miro.

These are some cool feeds :

- This one is a short (morning?) program with 3 presenters about all sorts of gadgets that come out in Japan (not electronics in particular).

珍品堂(朝○info)
http://www.news24.jp/podCast/rss_chinpin.xml

- Japanese Campus Girls' Love Baton. Haha, not the baton you're thinking of (or was it just me ^_-). Actually it's a "relay" in the sense that one girl interviews another, and then in the next program the girls swap sides. Every 3 programs or so there is another girl. They talk about dating, hobbies etc. The dialogues are not too hard to follow and the questions are also in the subtitles.

週刊!?女子大生バトンSeason3
http://opdi.net/baton2.xml

- Short programs set in various factories, traditional artisans, making of foods, etc. Also has a lot of subtitles. It's great but unfortunately there's only 9 programs available and it looks like they've stopped sad

松尾のぐぐっとジョブ (Good job!)

Technically the 1st and 3rd are pod casts, but personally I don't have the patience to watch them on my tiny iPod. But they look ok in Miro in fullscreen and the sound is good!

I just took a look to the "watch the japanese news" article from kathzu .... While I successfully downloaded the streaming of fuji news network (by the way aren t there more handy way to put it on my ipod ?  I mean yomiuri at least has podcast both audio and video with that . But yomiuri don t offer a script wich is tremendously useful .... so I really want to take fnn videos) i am still looking for the 30 minutes digest about which Khatzu has been talking about .  Where can I can find it ? is it a single streaming file ? if not do I have to look for the script of each parts ?

The digest is now at the bottom of the right column under the heading ニュース動画連続再生.  It opens in a separate window and is a playlist of a bunch of individual news videos.  You can open it directly in wmp if you get the playlist URL out of the popup window's source.

I'd like to find an easy way to convert it to mp3 files, but haven't done too much looking around yet.

how the selection of news video is made ?
I d like to take the script of the newz and with this digest I have to search for each and everyone of them in the lgeneral list ....and I didn't find any of them (but frankly speaking I didn't spend much on it).

Otherwise If you want to demux the audio track of the wmv video in a mp3 file then you have a lot of possibilities....none of them are easy though (but I have to go deep into virtual dub MPG2 before being assertive)
1- goldwave....but it s a shareware.
2- virtual dub MPG2 . Free but I barely scratched the surface
On the contrary to the old version it is said to be able to deal with WMV and ASF.... I'm a bit curious about this feat as I would be utterly surprised if Microsoft had become lenient on the pattent issue ..... (reason for wich the creator virtual dub 1.5 had to remove the WMV mod) . I can just assume that it is a different guy who doesn't fear to breach the pattent laws. So far I didn't succeed in demuxing the file though .It seems there is still a pattent problem but slightly different .
3- run audicity and your video file in the same time .
same kind of trick than for vlc .... works 100% sure but really boring. But maybe you can consider watching it a first time in the morning (and so register with audacity in the same time) ....

Some people may know of this....I noticed that someone had posted about keyholeTV software, but in my opinion it sucks.

download TVU player (windows and linux versions, no mac unfortunately) from here http://www.tvunetworks.com/

once installed, change the language to japanese....then on the left hand side you will have a list of the 4 major commercial channels.

the resolution is much like youtube and its all live.

I use it every night after coming home from work.

Yay! 松尾のぐぐっとジョブ (Good job!)  is back in full force since May, recent programs include a visit at a place they make 五月人形 (ごがつにんぎょう)  (date 080505) and also the famous super realistic "fake" foods they have at the entrance of restaurants in Japan (date 080522) :

AWESOME find; the quality is better than youtube (imo), and you can really just watch Japanese TV all day for free. Thanks for sharing, it's greatly appreciated smile

My only problem with TVU is that after upgrading to the latest version, the program became incredibly unstable.  It'll randomly crash and refuse to open again until I watch a channel on the TVU website's embedded player, and when it actually does work for any length of time it slams my computer with a blue-screen crash.  And none of that would be so bad if the support from the developers wasn't practically non-existent.

Honestly, I hope they work things out, because I really loved the app before it become totally unusable for me.

I've been using KeyholeTV for 4 days and I'm sick of it already. Horribly buggy. Downloading TVU and checking out freshverse rite now. Thanks for the links guys. Keep it up.
Moved my laptop away from the router a little bit and the TVU seems to play for about 10 seconds then the channel pauses (as if it was buffering [which it probably is]) just wanted to check that it is my weak internet and not a fixable bug or nething. big_smile

Freshverse is down until further notice, the guy who owns the slingbox is moving.

Nvm about TVU. The newest version is pretty buggy. The whole Audio/video department for japanese stuff rite now, is there any streaming audio as of now or is it just podcasts?

If it's audio you want then check out http://onsen.ag/

The radio shows are done by voice actors/actresses and other Anime related people. Their voices are all extremely clear and easy to follow and the quality is good. There's also a lot of different shows every day. Enjoy!

This is awesome.

Freshverse has been down for a long time due to the operator moving but hopefully it will be back soon.

TVU seems to lag horribly for me, and it crashes. Really doesn't seem like an option for me hmm

I'll check the other stuff out.

The green Japanese channels on TVU no longer seem to be there.

Tobberoth, they actually put the older version back up on the website, because so many people had trouble with the latest one. But the problem above still holds true.
