@OP: Just to let you know. To my own disappointment, I cannot understand spoken Japanese at all (merely basic greetings nothing else), although I know already far more than 12.000 unique words and read tons of Japanese. And I do listen 24/7 to Japanese passively only. I cannot listen to it actively as I get headache from listening to it without understanding a word >_<

what? you mean twelve thousand words and you only understand greetings?
how's that possible.. ?? lol.l I understood like 50% of talk/variety shows after a couple weeks or something and obviously that's probably a 1000 or 2000 words (this is a guestimate of course) common words are common so they come up a lot. Are you just learning words that are only used in news or something.  What is your goal? What do you want to understand? I personally have no interest in news. I only care about talk/variety shows and j-dramas and j-movies and even then i choose the ones i watch. I don't watch just any drama or any talk/variety show. I'll not watch an ep if it's a guest i don't care about etc etc.

You can't  understand talk/variety shows? dramas? ie try watching shabekuri and don't just listen, watch and read /hear at the same time and even then you still don't get anything? Well i guess the difference between me and you, i did "active" listening I suppose since I'm watching it and I see the text that matches the speech and i look up words and add it to srs etc etc. So you should look into ACTIVE listening if you want to get better at understanding. But also if you only have interest japanese literature and have none or whatever in tv then go for it i guess. It's your time... so.

So basically if all you do passive listening with the japanese tv on 24/7 and you're not looking up words or learning words that show up in tv or if you're only watching it passively, of course nothing will change.

Maybe you should do lyrics... it's sorta basic and mad repetitive and whatnot or does that give you headaches too?

For me watching tv is so easy to the point where I feel like watching tv is not as productive as reading japanese (by tv I mean talk/variety shows. I'm sure there's lots of words in news I can learn but I find thatstuff very boring and I don't care whether it's in english or jpanaese or chinese or korean. at most I'll care about news about talents/celebrities. That's as newsy as I'll ever get) but I still want to watch japanese tv because there's all these shows and episodes I want to watch... I would understand 90 % percent and from wathcing one episode of some show I add one card for vocab or one card for a sentence that i like and the reason is because I understand everything besides that one or two things.... so  to make my watching more productive and more active with my learning I started doing MCDs.

this is my post on MCD

Just even for the vocabulary/sentence card, I take the screenshot and save myself wtime with typing it up but it's bad because when i do the ankionline reviews I can't do it b.c. it's a picture.

tv-related: so this was one of the shows I watched in the beginning where I only understand 50% or something and I couldn't catch what people said. I love this corner because it's funny and it just goes to show japanese have a hard time catching japanese as well... well it's song lyrics and that can definitely apply to english as well but I feel it's more prevalent in Japanese

I appreciate your sharing your resources and the method which made you fluent in Japanese in such a short time, but could you be a bit less condescending while you're doing that? Thanks.
