Anyway I finally caved in on a Apple Cinema Display. Problem solved. >_>

Awesome! They're such good looking beasts. When you get it could you please turn down the brightness to zero and look at it through your iPad camera? I'd like a report on its PWM flicker (as far as I know it may not even use PWM at all).

Found a nice guide here about "specialty monitors (basically not 60hz TN)":

@shinsen  Ok I will try to. Google'ing a bit it seems the iMac doesn't have PWM. It may not be the same for the ACD though. Also this and this (Dell and iMac side by side, YouTube).

The picture does look rock solid to me.. maybe that's why I can take so much brightness as I joked in earlier post ^_^.

edit: Pulse Width Modulation, for anyone interested.

Well there ya go, there is a suspicious buzz I can hear at the back of the monitor, and there is a tiny speck, the size of a grain of sand in the glass pane, that reflects light and makes a pixel change colour as if it was a dead pixel. Oh, and when I connect it to the MBP and play any kind of sound, there is static/white noise coming from the speakers, which is a shame as the sound is otherwise quite good on the Apple Cinema Display.

I honestly don't know if I want to risk the lottery. Searching the web it seems people have so many problem with Apple's IPS displays. Think I'll ask for a return and buy something else or maybe risk one more from Amazon.. which has 30 day returns. sad

That's a problem with Apple is for the price you pay you expect to get 100% satisfaction, but a lot of people don't. At least if I paid 300-400 € if I have a less than perfect screen I would still feel good about it as it's something I could replace within 2-3 years and I had my money's worth.

Do you have one? Could be an option if I can find a lower price.

The key is the LG panel it seems...

I'm looking again for alternatives as I'm probably going to return the ACD.

Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D looks good too, anyone use it?

I can't help you with the dead pixel, but as for the white noise, it could be:

a)Are you sure it's not your audio cable? I've had cables go bad on me while using them. It's rare, but it happens. Have you tried changing your speaker cable? If you have the money, Mogami cables are very good. It's what professional music recording studios use. Also, monoprice makes really good quality audio cables considering their price.

b)Is the speaker cable wound up in a coil or sitting in a pile of other cables? Cheap audio cables often have subpar shielding and can lead to interference when coiled up (coiling creates a magnetic field) or placed near other cables. It's enough of a difference to make that static white noise sound. Most audio cables at computer retail stores are crappy.

c)Maybe there is some kind of electromagnetic interference near your monitor. Do you have any radio, broadcast, or Wifi devices close to your monitor?

d)Did you try plugging in your Macbook and Apple Cinema Display to different power strips?
If you haven't, just try it.

I use to have computer speakers that would pick up radio stations.
So I'd hear the radio even though I wasn't playing anything through my speakers....lol....
Turned out to be my audio cables.

I've even had equipment not work due to frequency interference with my cell phone.

Hi chamcham,

a) No, the ACD has a cable that splits in 3: USB2.0, Mag-thingamagic-to-recharge-your-laptop, and MiniDisplayPort. So I'm simply connecting the USB cable end to my old MacbookPro. Without it there is no sound. So I imagine sound is transferred digitally over the USB wire.

I've read that the ACD speakers also works in Windows via the DisplayPort alone, but for some reason this doesn't work in OS X.

b) No, no speaker cables.

c) Yes there is wifi, which doesn't seem to bother my iMac. My iMac integrated speakers work perfectly, and I would imagine they are more or less the same circuit for the ACD.

Bah I was freaking out!!1! smile Ironically, the Apple Cinema Display speakers worked OOB (out of the box) after Windows 7 installation. The sound comes through the DisplayPort cable, with no noticeable noise, and did not require the USB cable contrary to my old MacbookPro.
