Going from TL (target language) to English and from English to TL are two very different excercises. In the former you are checking your understanding of the sentence in your TL, i.e. working on a passive skill. In the latter you are trying to produce a sentence in your TL that is the equivalent of an English sentence, i.e. working on an active skill. Personally I don't think that Anki is the best option for developing active skills. In the former situation, even if your English translation of the TL sentence isn't doesn't match the translation on the card, you can usually use your understanding of English to judge whether or not your translation is equivalent in meaning. When you are translating the sentence from English to the TL and your sentence doesn't match making such a judgement will be much harder, unless you have someone to check your sentences. I believe there are better ways of working on your active skills, like lang-8 for writing or language exchange for speaking.

Having written the above paragraph I just realized that I made the assumption that you are using the sentence method, even though nothing in your post suggests that you are. I suppose going from English to TL makes a bit more sense if you are doing single words rather than sentences, but here as well you'd have to be aware of the fact that there is no one-to-one equivalence between English and TL words and that there could be different ways of translating the same word. The only case where I would recommend doing this for single words is if you are preparing for some sort of formalized vocab test.
