Hey folks,

lately my preferences for music is changing a lot and I'm glad I was introduced James Brown. I wonder if someone knows a track that is similar to this one: http://youtu.be/VKPiBeZOkxg

With "similar" I mean: it needs to have an organ in the background, it has to be melodic, emotional and preferrebly be in minor:D

I appreciate your advise/suggestions.

Usually songs built off the same chord progression will sound very similar.

A good example is Madonna's "Express Yourself" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way".
Some people complain that parts of Lady Gaga's song sounds too much like a ripoff of Express Yourself.

I'm not sure if it's similar at all, but Toshinobu Kubota is
pretty much considered the father of Japanese Soul Music.

He sang "Love Rain", which was the theme song for a Japanese drama:

Best way to explore the "similar songs" space is to use one of the internet personal radio services like Pandora. You can build a station with only one song as a seed and then let it go from there. I've tried this a number of times and have discovered a lot of new to me music, some of which I like quite a bit. You can either just let it go from that seed with no direction (which can lead to some weird but interesting places) or poke it with an occasional thumbs up or down.

The weirdest one that I have had running for a while was to start with Plastic Bertrand's* Ca Plane Pour Moi and give it no suggestions at all. It led me through to Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, and the Silver Sun Pickups to name a few.

* The 5th most famous Belgian of all time.

Sadly, Pandora in particular seems to be closed to users outside of the US right now. Well maybe you could get in with a fake IP address or something but that's quite some work.

@TwoMoreCharacters: Thanks for your efford searching and posting the links, but unfortunately I cannot listen to none of your songs because I'm living in Germany :s

@HyperBorea: Same here. I cannot listen to the song on youtube, but I will look it up somewhere else. Thank you! "Fade Out Lines - Phoebe Killdeer & The Short Straws" from the film Colombiana is good I find:)

You can't access parts of youtube from Germany? :s

I've always found it to be a bitch to find reliable proxy servers. If even youtube is this bad in your country maybe it would be good to invest in - what's it called - a VPS server? I know there's a user on here that spoke a lot about using a Japanese one that he found really rewarding.

YouTube in Germany really sucks.. If anyone out there has a VPS server slot or so to offer I would be very grateful. :s

@TwoMoreCharacters: Ok, I got Proxtube (a useful firefox addon as I find) to work again properly or rather, it got some update again and I could listen to your recommendations and I have to say that is exactly what I've been looking for smile Thank you so much!

There's always Last.fm, which even has a Japanese language version. I find its recommendations are better than Pandora's though that could be partly because I only listen to Japanese music now, and Pandora's Japanese music selection was pretty pathetic last I checked...
Anyway, I found Last.fm's suggestions to be good, even with the most obscure bands I could think of, so it might be worth trying.

I missed this topic before but someone revived it today.
Good taste there mate! I'm not a fan of that type of music, but that was such a great performance, the singer's voice and feel were amazing, his feeling and performance show how deep that song is! And I admire not knowing the genre because I believe that beautiful music is beautiful regardless of genres, so not confining yourself for a certain genre is admirable! Thanks for posting it here. (BTW, the deepness of it reminded me of Maggot Brain by Eddie Hazel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dh3bleXWaCk which he was told to write while having the feeling of after being told his mother just died!)

Check this out, it shows related artists and bands to one of your choice: http://audiomap.tuneglue.net/ Search for an artist the n click his node and select expand, then you can do the same with other 'nodes'.

EDIT: BTW, Organ has become by second most favorite instrument, it gives a very strong atmosphere! And its sustain has big impact!

You are welcome Tori-kun.  I also want to take this opportunity to plug www.stereomood.com

Its probably not going to get you james brown but what is awesome about it is that instead of having radio stations based on genre, they are based on mood. Examples of stations:

beautiful
it's raining
candlelight dinner
happy
asleep on feet
etc.

Its amazing. I really love the beautiful station smile

Tammi Terrell did a song from a demo circling around at the time that James Brown eventually transformed into It's a Man's World:

Talk about similar big_smile

If you're really into funk/soul I highly recommend Crazy Ken Band and Original Love. Absolute musts for any enthusiast of classic music who also happens to be studying Japanese.

Here's a vid of the two badasses performing a song together:
