It would be great if people share their vocab lists. If anyone wants mine, I would be glad to upload it. Its the vocab list I created to prepare for the level 4 examination and constantly updated since I am studying for lvl 3 now. smile I still haven't figured out a way to incorporate full sentences into my list. I would be glad if anyone can help me with that...

Here is where I get my sentences and how I set up my flash cards( as discussed in another topic). smile

I am thinking about buying this PDA system:

http://www.japaneselanguagetools.com/complete.html

and I'm wondering if Anki will run on it? I know virtually nothing about the windows platform (being a Mac guy) so if this is an easy answer, forgive me.

Thanks!

Dunno how useful this would be for others, but I thought it'd be nice if I could see what I rated the card last time I saw it. After showing the answer of course.

dbooster, that's the page that steered me away from a new electronic dictionary. It's a little pricey, but more than just a dictionary. I was tempted to get it. But because I wasn't sure if Anki would run or not, and I wanted access to other files on the go, and I was tired of lugging my notebook around, I decided on this:  http://www.kohjinsha.com/models/sh/sh8wp12/index.html .

It costs more, but it does more, too.  I've been drooling over the eijiro dictionary and will probably download it eventually.  I'm able to access edict dictionaries now from the touchscreen and save searches to a history file for later Anki input. It's a work in progress.  Funny, learning a computer language to help me learn japanese. Two birds and a rock. smile

Anki would need to be ported to run on a Windows Mobile PDA. I'm not sure if it's technically possible, and lacking the hardware I've never investigated it. Even if the GUI toolkit ran on it, I think the stickler would be the measely 64MB of RAM (though recently someone got the Anki libraries going on a Zauraus, so...)

The "dunno if this would be useful for others" was a kind invite to discuss! :P So feel free to discuss! By the by, are you a forum moderator or just naturally this way?

Not much to discuss about it if you ask me.  Either Mr. Elmes thinks it's a worthy addition or he doesn't.  Potentially any feature request could elicit comments from people and the bugtracker is a great place for those discussions to take place.

I'm not a moderator.  This is just me being me.  Pleased to meet you.

You could try just leaving the "Card Statistics" sidebar open while you're reviewing.  Not quite the same, but you can at least see what the last interval you gave a card was.

Ankiboy, I played with one of those at yamada denki the other day. It was neat. Just like you, I hate carrying my laptop around (15in powerbook... but too damn big) so it would be appealing. Also, having Anki at my disposal is a must. How is the touchscreen on it? I couldn't try the one at the store very well as it was missing the stylus and was bolted down. Does it recognize keystrokes without the need to push down really hard (as many Palms I have used seemed to be).

Also, what dictionaries can I get for windows?

ok.. edict dictionaries...  sorry, I completely skipped over your second paragraph. Head colds will do that to you.

dbooster: most of the really good commercial dictionaries are available in electronic format: daijirin, kenkyusha's, genius, etc. They're definitely worth the investment if you're serious about the language - edict is pretty bad in comparison (but it _is_ free, and sometimes has obscure entries that the commercial dictionaries don't)

Don't know about running Anki, but I would advise you to avoid anything with with the word 'Dell' written on it. They used to be really good, but recently I've heard nothing but horror stories about them.

Dell has been nothing but danger for a good 10 years now.

To be fair, their business laptops have treated me well. I picked one up for personal use, and the only thing that died on me in 3 years was the hard disk (due to overuse, I'll wager). Getting it fixed involved calling them up and they came to my house and fixed it on the spot.  Their laptops are also some of the cheapest out there.

dbooster, I haven't seen them at Yamada denki, but Best denki here only has the older version.  It's hard for me to rate the touchscreen since I haven't played with a modern day pda or tablet.  It is sensitive enough to pick up everthing you write if that's what you mean. I'm surprised at how well vista recognizes handwriting. It's not perfect, though. After calibrating the screen, the accuracy improved a lot. Originally, it was a few mm off.  I recently put a protective sheet over the screen so I have to push a little harder now.

Edict is free, but more than that, I can use it with the touchscreen. True, though, some of the definitions aren't up to par. Before I was going roundabout through rikaichan's interface. A friend of mine is helping me with programming and I have a simple interface to use now. So, it's not REALLY software but it works well enough.  It changes on a daily basis.  I haven't looked into the Japanese side of software dictionaries yet.

I do like having EVERTHING all together.  Anki gets lots of use. For looking up words on the quick, it's useless when it's not turned on so I use my keitai for that.

Cheers.

Sorry to keep off topic, but I wanted to agree with this.  After Hurricane Katrina, I bought my brother a brand new decked out XPS with a 24 inch digital tv to cheer him up (he lost everything) and even though the monitor broke three times, each time, Dell replaced it with no questions.  Just one phone call and the new ones were on the way.  The last time was even about a year outside of the warranty but they did it anyway since he had trouble two times before.  I recommend their cheap laptops to my teachers here in Japan and about 5 of them have been able to upgrade and have been happy.  In Japan no one even seems to have a deal close to Dell's price.  So maybe they have some garbage from time to time, but their prices and customer service seem top notch in my books.

You make it sound pretty nice, aikiboy. Unfortunately, the head cold I complained about several messages up has turned out to be chicken pox! And let me tell you, it's true what they say about the older you are when you get it the worse it is (as in very painful). So my planned yamada denki and eiken trips this weekend to check out the kojinsha are out for the next week or two. Oh well.

Sorry to hear that, dbooster. My sister has chicken pox at the moment, too.

Anyway, there's always internet shopping. :-)

dbooster, too bad about the chicken pox, never nice to be sick.

the kohjinsha is my new baby, so of course I like it. smile The touchscreen is new tech for me, and I like that too!  If there are newer software dictionaries, it seems vista would handle the touchscreen text entry without any trouble.  It's just that what's out there can't handle unicode/? or is designed for a pda.

Went by Best denki today, lo and behold only 4 months late, they have the new model out  and >2万 overpriced. So maybe Yamada Denki has the new one afterall.

A flimsy attempt to stay on topic. wink

Resolve, I was reading about a function in Wakan, dropping in Japanese to get the furigana.  What do you think about copying a bundle of Japanese from the internet, formatting it and importing into anki? Kind of a random vocab test as opposed to the focused vocab that most people are doing?

Just a thought.

It's related to supermemo's "incremental reading". I've thought about it. It'll require a lot of work to do well. Maybe at some point..

One thing I`d love to see on Anki is some added functionality to the "simple" review mode for older browsers.  It does not display correctly on my computer at work, so I can`t select which deck I want to review from the browser.  Thankfully, the online program remembers the last reviewed deck.  This means that I can change the deck by using the program at home, before I go to work, but it also means that I`m stuck with the same deck for the entire day. (Of course, this isnt to suggest that I spend THAT much time studying at work tongue)

Does anyone else have this problem?  I have 3 offices, all running internet explorer 6.0, and I experience this on all of my computers.  Where the "current deck" button should be there is instead a red "x."
