I went downtown to pick up some books and DVD's from the Book Off today only to find that it had shut its doors on June 23rd! Even worse, I missed the closing out sales! I'm so crushed. It was nice having the store here since I'm only about lower intermediate and it had tons of stuff for all ages and levels. Goodbye $2.00 books and $3.00 movies. T_T

Anyone have suggestions on places to get reasonably priced Japanese books or movies that ship to Canada? (I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for shipping.) I fear my only option will be to drive 6 hrs round trip to Kinokuniya in Seattle...

Sigh~

I feel your pain!  There was another Japanese book shop in one of the Chinese malls in Richmond and after it closed down, Book Off was the only place left to go for Japanese books.  Book Off was the highlight of Vancouver trips for me, and will be sorely missed.  I'm really kicking myself for not picking up the entire set of Hana Yori Dango manga (It was only $72!)
As for places that ship to Canada, you should check out www.yesasia.com/  They offer free shipping, and their prices are quite reasonable.  The only problem is that their selection can be a bit limited if you're looking for older books, but they seem to carry all the new books.
RIP Book Off

I wish I was as close as a 3 hr drive to a Japanese bookstore.

I'm lucky in that I'm a half-hour (ish, more like 25 min or so) drive away from a Kinokuniya and about two hours away from a bigger one...but their stuff is getting more and more expensive, which sucks.

I miss Book Off from when I took my trip to Japan. 105円 used books!? Freaking insane. I live in Illinois so I'm 30 minutes away from Mitsuwa which has a bookstore but they can get somewhat expensive.

Kinokuniya USA ships to Canada, though I'm not sure if it's cheaper than Yesasia for shipping there.

LOL I live in downtown Vancouver and have a big box of various Japanese books you can take off my hands for free if you like. I've been trying to get rid of them. PM me if you are interested. (anybody else pm me if you are interested too)

The other option (where I got my books) is from the central library book sale: http://www.vpl.ca/events/details/booksale/

$0.75 a book. Be prepared to wade through boxes of books since most are chinese but there are lots of gems there if you spend the time.

Note: the library booksale in the smaller room sucks (the July one maybe?) but the other 2 are really good
