I remember reading a thread on here about the (don't quote me... )... 10,001 kanji.. or something ridiculous like that is a kanji that doesn't really exist and apparently heisig mentioned it somewhere in the supplement (which I don't see). ?  Does anyone know what I'm talking about?...

And then there's this kanji that I see in jarvik7's profile pic that's also apparently fake.. Where was that kanji from again? a japanese shop?

I've been looking for the thread again but can't find it, it's one of those things where if you can't remember the answer, you just can't let it go til you do.

Thanks

Could this be one of the characters you're looking for?

Seems like an extended version of my avatar. I think mine is a place name, but could be wrong.

There's some talk about this character and its 'ridiculous number' (50,001) in the thread about the Remembering the Hanzi 2 book; this rcloud's post explains it:

"It is the final character Heisig presents (in a second postscript of the book). He used 50,000 as an estimate of the number of characters in a modern dictionary and as this isn't included in modern dictionaries he presents it as the final character... #50,001."

About the number, I should say that the Wenlin 4 dictionary has 75,000+ hanzi but it still doesn't include this character (though it has a very similar one without the "heart" primitive).

Toshiromiballza contributed this collection of oddities which you might find interesting:

A list of some of the weirdest looking kanji EVER:

Visually remarkable and a few of the explanations are fascinating. Some ancient, some not found in dictionaries, some Korean, some abbreviations, some writer-concoctions, etc.

Wow, some interesting characters there!
On that topic, I'm reminded of a character that one of my Japanese professors showed me back when I was still a beginner. He drew 女 surrounded by 3 男、and he said this is a character for 'rape'. Anyone ever heard of that one?

I'm guessing that's the one you were thinking of, but as far as I can tell, "rape" isn't one of its meanings:

姦, however, is used in a word for rape: 強姦.
