Amazon is all good and dandy for all you us/uk dwelling japanese students. But sadly they don't ship to canada sad and I really don't want to spend 200 on a new copy because I am poor and a student. Is there someway to get a used copy somewhere that ships to canada?
thanks!

Doesn't Amazon.ca ship to Canada?

Amazon.com has the 5th edition for $230 new, presumably because it's out of print.  (Amazon.uk wants £528.10.)  And for some reason the Amazon links on the main page of this site still link to the 5th edition.  Someone really ought to fix that.
OP, you should be able to pick up a copy of the current (6th) edition new for about $30-40.

Amazon is good and dandy for us Canadians too.  I'm assuming you're looking for Read the Kanji volume 1, and you can get it on amazon.ca for $35.

I know it's not used, but $35 for a new textbook is really good (especially when you consider that people are trying to sell used copies for $46), plus you get free shipping.

Can you use Abe books in Canada? http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchR … 5&y=11

If so, that would be your cheapest option for sure.

EDIT: Ouch! Though copies start at under $5 US, the shipping rates are brutal.

Shipping Rates:       6 - 10 * business days     6 - 10 * business days
First book:     US$ 16.95     US$ 16.95
Additional books from same seller:     US$ 11.00     US$ 11.00

You may be able to work out an alternative shipping solution with the bookseller that bypasses Abe books, but it might take awhile. Amazon.ca is looking better now.

Bleuenvert, couldn't you go in an old-fashioned bookstore and order the book from them? Do you have Waterstones in Canada? They've been really good for me in Brussels, didn't even ask me any extra fees.

It may be blasphemy to say this but I think the method has outgrown its master and this site is much better than the book.

Agreed. The only value the book has to me now is stroke order, which there is plenty of other resources for that.

Ditto smile Most of the stories on this site are better than in the book and for difficult stroke order I preferred jisho.org.

Okay but you know how it works. I imagine you could bypass the book altogether if you are smart and read the forums a lot, but still having the book as a reference and the advice from Heisig is very helpful.

I buy everything from bookdepository. Cheap prices+free shipping worldwide=win. And everything is new smile.

It's a bit more expensive than when I bought it, though =/. Sometimes they do huge discounts, so you can ask for a notification when the price drops, if it does (it should get a discount around September for their "back to school" pack... but it might not).

It is helpful. I wouldn't want to discourage someone inclined to support Heisig and the publisher by making a purchase but if finances are tight and availability/shipping is a problem I would point out that Heisig has the first part of the book (up to chapter 11) free for download:

It's probably enough to get started.
