Thank you for this info.  The Rakuten Kobo website looks like it was really meant for Martian aliens who have not heard of ebook readers and ebooks. big_smile

I wonder if Rakuten's Kobo is using the ePub3 standard to render the vertical text formatting, or if those are PDF files in the images they are showing.  The former would be wonderful, the latter would suck.

Yes. It uses EPUB 3.0. That's what the article says. :-)
The Kobo Touch is wifi only. Unless they added 3g or 4g to the japanese version.

Ahhhhh, finally, real vertical text using ePub!!!  Now if we can only get our hands on this Kobo and those Japanese ebooks.  Rakuten, we haz credit card.

I wonder if Amazon's Japanese Kindle will also be using ePub3.

Amazon has it's s own format. So it's pretty much guaranteed that they won't
use EPUB 3.0.
