Compound sentence question

#1
While reading Tae Kim's grammar guide, I saw this example in the section on Compound Sentences:

時間がありまして、映画を見ました。

I thought when there is more than one verb in a sentence, they conjugate from the plain form, until the final verb in the sentence, like:

時間があって、映画を見ました。

Thanks!

時間がありまして is more polite, that's all.

Okay, I guess that seems simple enough. Thanks for the reply!

I think ありまして is just a more formal form of あって. But maybe it denotes politeness as well.
