Books/Comics coming to Google Play but...

#1
So it looks like the Japanese version of Google Play is finally going to get books/comics, but as far as I can tell, it looks like it's Japan-only. Poop.

If anybody manages to find a way to actually get at Japanese books in Google Play from outside of Japan, I'd love to know how. (Short of using a proxy, that is.)

On a related note, has anybody tried buying ebooks from honto.jp (used to be bk1) from outside Japan?

Not yet, but I'd be interested to hear of anyone's experiences as well. I still buy most of my dead tree books there, though.

I have bought a few ebooks from honto. I won't recommend it at this point; the web reader is unstable and I have not figured out how to download books to the standalone reader. (but for print books honto is great!)

What I recommend for ebooks is ebookjapan. They have good selection (mostly manga) and a standalone reader. They also have mobile readers for a few platforms, but I have not tried those yet.

I mean ideally you could... acquire... the manga files and use the Kindle app on your smartphone to create a scenario that might be suitable for you.
