Hi Resolve. Is there any possibility of implementing a feature that you can send a card's face or field to a Text To Speech engine?

I suppose that shouldn't be that hard... I mean, if you can do that with an extension for Firefox (Speak It), it would be possible to do the same with Anki. Besides, it would be a great feature that would save a lot of time and effort to a lot users.

How would it save time or effort?

In the same way that generating automatically the written pronunciation saves you typing time and effort. But instead of typing time, it would save you time that otherwise you would spend reading out loud or having someone else reading out loud your sentences, or ripping audio from cd's or movies.

Ask a native speaker, and they'll tell you that Japanese TTS software is not quite natural.

And if you're just listening to the text rather than saying it yourself, you're just being passively exposed to it instead of actively practicing it. I don't think that would be good for your retention ratio.

I havent tried any plug ins yets, but was wondering...With the custom dictionary plug in, is it possible to have Anki point to RevTK sight. Specifically, the READING section. I have used this section a few times, copying and pasting from Anki, so that I could get the Heisig Keyword of a kanji that I had forgotten.

That seems like it would be a useful feature for RevTK users.

I'm using Anki to review for the Kanken next month. I have run into some issues and would like to know if there are features that already solve them or ways to get around them. A lot of it revolves around having a lot of information simultaneously in multiple categories.

1. Is there any way to show tags in the review? I tag all my cards by jouyou level and also by parts of speech and would like to see them during reviews. I realize I can copy and paste them into a new custom field, but it would be much easier not to have to.

2. Can I rearrange the order fields are shown on the cards?

3. Reviewing by tags. Can I review a set of tags with all the others turned off, then turn that set off and review the others? For example, say I want to review jouyou 1 & 2 compounds, but seperately. Can I turn all but 1, review, turn off 1, and then review 2? Does that make sense?

4. Is there a way to copy/paste cards between decks? Is there a way to simply combine decks? If I can only combine, is there a way I can save several copies of a deck, delete the uneeded cards, and then combine the wanted cards with another deck?


A couple problems:

1. When I sort cards, they do not always sort perfectly by the desired method. For example, if I sort by Expression, I want to see all the kanji compounds grouped at the top or bottom of the list. Now, they are scattered around.

2. (Maybe directly related), I changed my model after I had already input some cards. I've tried to change the model to apply to all the cards in the deck, but some will not display the added fields. I've tried to change the model with both forms of cards but it will not apply throughout the deck.

2. edit the question/answer format in the model properties - if you want to change the order in add cards/the editor, you can't do that at the moment

3. this is micromanaging, which goes against the spirit of an SRS. You can do it manually by adding tags to the suspended list, but it's deliberately not convenient. If you want to review by various categories in order, add tags to the "high priority" list instead.

4. use 'sync' to combine decks, or import

1. the cards are grouped by model first

2. you probably have more than one model, thus updates to one model are only reflected in the cards associated with that model. Currently there is no way to merge cards into a single model

Micromanaging a deck isn't a bad thing. I need it to focus on test materials. Here's a better description of my problem: every vocab I enter is tagged with their jouyou level. For example, 横断歩道 gets 8, 6, 9, 9. I am taking level 8 so I would like to review every compound that has a level 8 in it. But I want to exclude any words that do not include at least on level 8 kanji. More clearly, how do I study 8 and block 6 and 9 in other words without the above example being blocked?

So there's no way to apply model properties universally? I've applied the same characteristics to my models to make them the same, but they still don't sort correctly.

Can't you just do all this with low and high priority settings? Just put "9" in the high priority field. Although you do bring up another good point what happens to a card tagged "x" and "y" with "x" as high priority and "y" as a low priority?

Suspend all your cards.
In the edit deck window, use the Tags dropdown box to display only the cards with the certain tag(s) that you desire.
Un-suspend those cards.

A new year, new school term and a new Anki and I've decided to get on with studying and stop thinking about it so much. My still new goal is to add the vocab from Kanji in Context to my Anki studies and I tried typing them up with about six fields. Tedious. Was trying to scan the book and although promising, I'd still have to add fields and I'm pretty lazy.

SO, back to Wakan. I look-up the words I want(don't already know) and save them to a list, KIC1, for example, for Chapter 1 words. Afterwards, I wind up with WORD, PRONUNCIATION, MEANING, CHAPTER. Also, it allows you to edit the meaning of each word while saving it to the list which came up quite a few times.

Then I set up the matching fields in Anki and imported them. I figured out how to display other fields so on the front of the card is the Chapter and Word, while Pronunciation and Meaning are on the back. BTW, nice to know you can do that with tags.

I haven't really explored all Anki has to offer since I imported the entire Joyo list and have worked on that exclusively, previous false starts on other decks aside .

And this leads me to ask all of you not so much WHAT you study, but HOW are you getting your data in? Entire lists, card by card? Is there a better, less time consuming way I need to be aware of? :O

It's a good subject I think. I keep a spreadsheet using google docs and add to it every now and again with new words or phrases that I come across. I then import that into anki.

For people living in Japan, I think there's a lot of scope for creating an application on your keitai which would let you quickly punch in new cards. Certain things could be automatically generated such as yomikata fields and definitions from dictionary fields. That way, you could quickly put cards into a file ready to import into anki. I realise that the online version is very good for this but you don't want to have to load up your keitai's web browser each time you want to add cards.

I basically do what wrightak does and just put in a file to import later. Recently I found a plugin for Firefox called Perapera-kun and I've decided to use it. It's basicly rikai-chan with the ability to save the highlighted entry to file. It saves it in as a .csv, so I can import it with Anki. Sadly the file is sjis encoded, which anki doesn't like. So I wrote a plugin (it's really hackish), that lets Anki import sjis .csv files. I suppose the next logical thing to do would be writing a plugin that auto-imports a specified file whenever Anki starts....

I knew about peraperakun and had thoughts to use it, but also was exploring wakan which does essentially the same thing. On export with Wakan, it offers different formats to save to and I like the ability to save to different categories which can become different fields in anki. When saving from peraperakun, how much data do you get in each entry? If it includes grade level, stroke count, etc., I might just make the switch.

Google docs is new to me. It looks really convenient if you want access from anywhere or want to share. I've been wondering if I should start my own spreadsheet of vocab. Like others I'm sure, I've got a huge collection to choose from, JLPT, verbs, grammar, etc., but I couldn't find anything specific to Kanji in Context, my next step after RTK1.

Not really spreadsheet savvy, but if I do import my Vocab list into Excel, or perhaps google docs, is it possible to export portions of the file itself so I don't add repetetive entries into my Kanji in Context deck? Of course, I could just delete what I don't want from the exported file, I suppose. Whaddayathink?

I'm pretty fast just entering by hand, but I'm working from a textbook so everything is already all in the same place. I look it up in Wakan, type my chosen definition, and enter the tags for kanken level, and part of speech. It's slow enough that I get review and benefit from doing it, but fast enough that it's not frustratring.

Thanks for the help with my last questions. A couple more:

1. I fixed my model discrepencies so that all the cards are the same. But now every Reading field in the Edit Deck search results field displays "invalid format; see model properties". The cards still display the correct Reading tied to the Expression, but they don't display in the search field. I never touched any of the default three fields when editing my models.

2. Is there any way to display furigana for select kanji? I have some kanji compounds that contain upper level kanji. They do not have to be written on the test, but the tested kanji within the compound appear often and do. I can replace them with kana in the Expression field, but I'd rather keep the kanji since it aids in visual memory. One inelegant solution is to just include kana in () next to the Expression if furigana can't be activated for certain kanji... I'm sure a solution to this would be appreciated by every user since there are so many comounds that are common and we'd like to enter, but don't necessarily know all the kanji within.

1. there is no 'reading field' in the search results - there is only the 'question' and the 'answer'. Fiddle with the question or answer format and figure out the problem (you're probably referencing a field which doesn't always exist, like %(myfield)s on a model with no 'myfield)

2. the furigana is already displayed in the answer. I don't see the need to include it in the question as well

Is there a way to find and replace a lot of values at once (in a particular field)? Sort of like the Find and Replace feature in a word processor.

And I get the follow error whenever I start Anki - "Missing msvcp71.dll" :/

I'm running Anki on my PC, not the website. At the bottom of the display it says "Remaining: 56". When I go to the Charts display, today's "Due Cards" are between 50 and 60, could be 56. Does this mean:
a) Remaining cards and Due Cards are always equal?
b) There are 56 cards due now and between 50 and 60 cards will become due later today?
c) Of the 50-60 "Due Cards," 56 are due right now, and 2 or 3 will become due later today?

when cards are due, you review them. So remaining cards and due cards are the same thing.
