if I want to learn the word "巨大", for my recognition card I will have the word "巨大" on the Front, hiragana reading and English definition on the Back.

For production, I put the word 巨大 on the back, but what should I put on the front? I can not put both English definition and hiragana reading on the front because the hiragana reading would give the word away making it a kanji production only, and if I take out the hiragana reading with only the English definition, there will be synonyms for the word big in Japanese, I could produce the other words in Japanese that also means big such as"大きい”、”雄大” and all these words can fit with the English definition.

What is the best way to make production card without giving away too much in the question yet not result in this synonym issue?

I would like to hear other solutions too.Because I often struggle with words like :引き上げる・差し上げる・持ち上げる wich is really confusing.But for now I added a new field :tips where I could write for your exemple of 大きい・雄大
for exemple :大きい： 1kanji
　　　　　　　　　　雄大 2kanji
or add a crop of a sentence .Having instant access to some readily available sentence exemple really helps, like the tatoeba plugin.

adding sentence don't really fix the synonyms problem because the very nature of synonyms is that they can all fit into the same sentence.

Add to the "*not" list as your vocab gets bigger. Also, 大きい is more like "big" and 巨大 is more like "gigantic", so their not too much the same.

What's the problem with writing the hiragana with the English meaning? Am I misunderstanding something or are you typing out the Kanji by using an IME? If that's the case, I don't have this trouble because I am writing the Kanji on paper. You could try writing out the Kanji instead and that'll solve your problem.

Front: 大きい
Back: Big(おおきい)

When it's showing the front, test whether you know the meaning and pronunciation.
When it's showing the back, test whether you know how to write the Kanji.

If a word is truly a synonym for another word, in the sense that it can replace the other word in most sentences, then do you really need to learn how to *produce* this word? Why would you need to, if you can just always use the other word that you apparently already know better?
And if the words have some slight differences in meaning, then you should be able to specify this in your definition.

ya I agree the E->J production card model has huge problems. best production practice for this type of thing is just talking with people. you get stuck, search for the word then or later, and remember it forever as active memory.
we all need to get used to speech one of these days, so why not kill 2 birds with one stone and use it as production practice?
If you're desperate for production, subs2srs is also good for it... you hear the audio, and produce the sentence... essentially turning a string of hiragana into words and grammar.

it's good to remember that production cards require a lot more energy than recognition cards, and will really clog up your reviews if they accumulate.
